Yates is the author of good books like Amos Fortune. Journeyman is the story of an itinerant artist who creates stencils to decorate walls. The book has historical detail about these artists as well as bits about other period occupations, including farmers dealing with crop failure in various ways. The main character's growth in faith is understated but it is definitely one of his strengths, especially helping him deal with persecution when bad things happen after he arrives in one town.I don't think I'd recommend this for age 9-12, as I saw in a description, because the book is not just about childhood but also about the main character's marriage plans and obstacles. But definitely by age 12 and even parents enjoy a good Yates story.

This is a wonderful book. 1.) It is written very interesting, making it easy for children to read it.2.) It provides great insights into life in early America as well as life for a deaf girl. Very worthwhile to read.3.) Christian character is held high, without anyone being fakely pious. All people have struggles but Christian virtue triumphs in the end. Great for children and adults alike!
