R Korosec5 Stars Out Of 5The Institutes (Ancient Christian Writers)March 3, 2022R KorosecThe actual title of this work is The Institutes (teachings) of the Cenobia (common-life) and the Remedies for the Eight Principle Vices. For anyone that is interested in focusing on personal spiritual formation and growth in the character of Christ I would consider it indispensable. The book has two parts. In the first part, Cassian gives us a description of the monks' garb, how to pray the Psalms and Prayers, and the teachings given to novices. In the second part, the eight principal vices are each given their own chapter discussing the origins and natures of these vices and how to attain to the virtues that they suppress. This book has a tremendous amount of wisdom that our day and age is lacking. Traveling back in time to hear what the early Church Fathers learned as they pursued God through their own dedication and sacrifices is a true gift from God. I am thankful for John Cassian recording his thoughts and to the Spirit for preserving it for the church today. Grace to you.
