Publisher's Description

The Insanity of God is the personal and lifelong journey of an ordinary couple from rural Kentucky who thought they were going on just your ordinary missionary pilgrimage, but discovered it would be anything but. After spending over six hard years doing relief work in Somalia, and experiencing life where it looked like God had turned away completely and He was clueless about the tragedies of life, the couple had a crisis of faith and left Africa asking God, "Does the gospel work anywhere when it is really a hard place?  It sure didn't work in Somalia.

Nik recalls that, "God had always been so real to me, to Ruth, and to our boys. But was He enough, for the utter weariness of soul I experienced at that time, in that place, under those circumstances?" It is a question that many have asked and one that, if answered, can lead us to a whole new world of faith.

How does faith survive, let alone flourish in a place like the Middle East? How can Good truly overcome such evil? How do you maintain hope when all is darkness around you? How can we say "greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world" when it may not be visibly true in that place at that time? How does anyone live an abundant, victorious Christian life in our world’s toughest places? Can Christianity even work outside of Western, dressed-up, ordered nations? If so, how?

The Insanity of God tells a story—a remarkable and unique story to be sure, yet at heart a very human story—of the Ripkens’ own spiritual and emotional odyssey. The gripping, narrative account of a personal pilgrimage into some of the toughest places on earth, combined with sobering and insightful stories of the remarkable people of faith Nik and Ruth encountered on their journeys, will serve as a powerful course of revelation, growth, and challenge for anyone who wants to know whether God truly is enough.

The book "The Insanity of God" was not the book I had anticipated it to be. I expected that it would talk more about the loss of their son and how they continued to serve God. The reality is that was only a minor part of the book. This book had me evaluating my faith. Could I serve God if everything appeared to be failing? Would I be willing to try day after day?

Nik Ripken asked questions I had thought before. Why do so many Americans not understand that we are all called to live out the great commission? For many, we don't understand "Go" to be personal.

The book highlights the fact that as Americans we are spoiled. We see persecution as the exception to the rule. The reality is that for many people persecution is the rule. Yet it is in the persecution that we see the most growth. When we are growing in the midst of persecution we hold tightly to the lessons we have learned. We must be willing to go...whether we return or not is in God's hands.

This book has already made an impact on me and I know as I continue to ponder the message that I will continue to mine the depths of the message. If you want God to shake up your life this book is definitely one to read!

Superb book -- highly recommended reading that restores an important perspective that we've largely lost in modern American church culture. Great DVD too!

This is an amazing book. Every Christian should read it. We take so much for granted here in America. This book will challenge you in many ways. Get off the bench and be a true Christ follower.

I had seen the movie and wanted the book. The book is great, with more details than the movie could provide. We are not to be pew-sitters if we truly believe the Bible and are Christ followers. The Ripkens show the true story of being Christ followers. I would also recommend the follow-up book, Insanity of Obedience.

It seems that we have become too comfortable in our lives. This book should awaken every heart and soul from their slumber and make them wonder why as Americans we have not suffered for Christ. Why we sit in our comfortable church pews and houses listening and reading our works of literature and Bibles. We should be stirring up our souls to find where Christ is at work. We should be finding our missions and do what Christ called us to do, seek and save the lost. This book makes you yearn for the faith of those persecuted. To want to find the same passion for the lost. It stirred my soul.
