Cara PutmanIndianaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Fun look at Homeschooling Life and StrugglesJuly 27, 2013Cara PutmanIndianaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5This book is chick-lit colliding with the reality of homeschooling. From the first pages I was smiling and nodding along. The author uses a month by month approach to chronicle this first-person view of homeschooling from the fictional (but oh so real) eyes of a mom of three who's trying to do the right thing and overwhelmed by all the options and doing it right. Julianne Miller is the kind of young mom I love to sit down next to and encourage. Since I can't do that for all homeschooling mamas, this book is a great break. You'll nod along, think 'yep, that happens in my family' and more. Most of all, you'll be encouraged!
The back is filled with practical helps, but this is a novel. As a former homeschooled kid and now homeschooling momma to four, I can attest that it's one that hits all the themes and angst of a homeschool year.

It was a wonderful read that made me laugh and cringe, relating to many of the author's stories. It is a quick read, so it's perfect for busy moms who usually can't find the time for a relaxing story. I'm sharing this with all of my friends!
KoreamomPittsgrove, NJAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Witty and Wonderful homeschool book!June 16, 2012KoreamomPittsgrove, NJAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Homeschool Experiment is the story of Julianne Miller and her three young children Daniel, Joy and Michael as they navigate their first year of homeschooling together.
If I did not know better I would swear that The Homeschool Experiment was written about me! Those where my first thoughts when I started reading this book! Really.
Of course this book is not entirely like my life, I only have two children and I have never once been to a homeschool convention. *gasp* I have poured over curriculum and made purchases I knew were not a fit for our family and created a homeschool schedule I could not possibly maintain! I have homeschooled a 7 year old while chasing a 2 year old and trying to figure out how to get it all done and remain sane!
Julianne and her family step out on their homeschool journey and find that some days are hard, some days are down right halarious and some days are not at all what you expect!
She faces many of the difficulties we all face as homeschoolers being overwhelmed by the many curriculum choices, worrying we will choose the wrong one and learning to teach older children while chasing around a toddler!
The best part of The Homeschool Experiment is that it is laugh-out-loud funny! Oh my! I have never laughed so much while reading a book about homeschooling! I will not give away the story, but there are many parts of this book I can really relate to!
This book is a wonderful read for seasoned homeschoolers and new homeschoolers alike!
Julieanne MillerOregonAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A fun, relaxing, and humorous read for homeschoolsJune 16, 2012Julieanne MillerOregonAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5First of all, do not attempt to read this book while driving (oops, I mean riding) in a car on a long trip and the nearest bathroom is still an hour away. You will be laughing hard every now and then, and you want to arrive at your destination still wearing dry clothes and looking somewhat presentable.
I took The Homeschool Experiment with me around town while I was reading it. After all, for busy homeschool moms, the best times to read books for pleasure are at the children's orthodontist, or while waiting for your child to get a haircut, or during a child's violin lesson, etc. Sitting in a quiet room at home, pleasantly reading a book, rarely happens around here.
While I didn't flash the book around town, saying, "Look what I'm reading right now!", it was interesting to hear people making comments about this book. I haven't experienced that for quite some time. Maybe because it is so unusual these days for the average American to see someone reading a physical book while waiting around town, instead of texting and viewing the internet on a smart phone, it is shocking to them. I don't know!
The orthodontist, who himself homeschools his children, said, "Is that for real? An experiment?" He was amused when I explained that the main character was none other than Julianne Miller. Of course, the names sound identical when pronounced, so of course, he thought it was about me, right? I made sure he knew that the book wasn't really about me. Ha!
I don't know where I was reading this book when I laughed so hard that everyone stared at me. Was it at my hairdresser's shop? Or during an orchestra rehearsal? I don't remember. All I remember is that I could NOT contain my laughter, no matter how hard I tried to be polite. My daughter had warned me that one part of the book was SO funny that she hadn't laughed that hard for a long time! (Yes, she stole the book from the mailman and read it before I had the chance to grab it.)
Sure enough, I laughed so hard that it was embarrassing! Gulp.
My mom took The Homeschool Experiment with her on a trip to Alaska, and she got to the hilariously funny part (which I didn't tell her about beforehand), and she laughed so hard that she actually called me from Alaska to tell me about it! I wasn't home, so she left a message, but I'll tell you, I had another good laugh listening to her message!
Okay, so about The Homeschool Experiment: it is hilariously funny (oops, I already said that), and it is poignant and relevant to any homeschool mother's life no matter what stage of homeschooling she may be in. You will be filled with hope, encouragement, laughter, some great ideas about homeschooling, and discernment about homeschooling, all while reading a knee-slapping story.
This may sound weird, but I even think that people who are opposed to homeschooling will get something out of this book. Seriously - it is written so well and is such an excellent story. It may not change their minds about educating children at home, but I know it will give them more understanding about the whole process.
AReadingMotherTexasAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Must-Read for All Moms!!April 20, 2012AReadingMotherTexasAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is great! I very rarely feel like I "can't put down" a book, but this book was that way. It was funny and very easy to read. I loved the many great "homeschool" ideas thrown in throghout the book. It looks at many angle of different educational choices without being judgemental. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even possibly considering homeschooling! It's also a great way to better understand those families that choose to homeschool.
