Sara's grandmother passed away, and Sara must return to small town Sweet Bay, Alabama. Upon returning, she finds out that she has inherited her grandmother's B&B, along with responsibility for her long term housemates. As she restores the B&B, Sara uncovers Mag's past, and learns more than she has ever thought possible.

I loved the characters, and how Denton wove love and pain together with hope for the future, and how she connected the past with the present. I enjoyed the relationships that spanned generations, and seeing how the character's pasts impacted who they became later in life.

I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.

I'm not sure where to begin with this review. Well I think I must first say I'm still in awe of the authors beautiful writing. The story took me back to a time in my childhood when I was happy. I would visit my granddad on his farm every summer. He built the two story house himself and had the most gorgeous wrap around front porch. As I began to read this book I felt like "The Hideaway " was just like my granddad's house. The memories made there were priceless.

I loved reading about Mags and her spirit that was full of life. To read her story was like walking back in time with my grandmother. The house was always full of wonderful people who became family. Mags had a love for her home and when people came to stay they never wanted to leave. Oh my how the story flowed so smoothly from Mags to Sara.

Sara is shocked to find out that her grandmother has left her home to her. I know it was hard for Sara to go back there but what she discovers there is more than just a house. As Sara decides to renovate the place she uncovers a secret about her grandmother that will change her life. There are wonderful characters that make the story emotional and heartwarming at the same time.

Will Sara be able to renovate the house and fulfill her grandmother's wish? What will Sara decide about her shop back at home? I loved how Sara was able to know her grandmother better as the story unfolded. The author has included discussion questions at the end which will make a great compliment to a book club. I highly recommend this book and encourage book clubs to put this on their list. If you aren't in a BookClub then grab the book , get comfy and allow the author to sweep you away to meet Mags at "The Hideaway."

I received a copy of this book from The Fiction Guild. The review is my own opinion

"She'd do well to know my story, know how it changed me from quiet to bold. Weak to strong. I'll tell her. I'll sit her down and tell her everything. One of these days." (3)

A beautiful story of love and family, of friendships and of possibilities, The Hideaway by debut author Lauren K. Denton brings you all the best of southern fiction as you can fathom. There are stories, and then there are the kind of stories that just pulls you into the setting, the romances and the journey of self-discovery, for all the characters.

The Hideaway is every bit Sara's story, as it is Mags'. It was through knowing Mags' story that Sara discovered much more than knowing who her grandmother was, and the dilapidated and run-downed old Victorian held all the secrets. What is The Hideaway, and is it for all? The journey for some may not be as expected, but nonetheless, realization and revelation will come eventually.

"Things aren't always as difficult as you make them out to be. Sometimes you just have to turn your brain off and dive in." (322)

Surprising to find that I really liked all the characters in this book. It doesn't always happen, but I find even the most despicable character will have served their purpose in The Hideaway. And that round out the development of both Mags and Sara beautifully. With all the hospitality and quirks you'll find in Southern fiction, The Hideaway held all the charm and mystery. It is perfect for fans that love history, details and stories within stories.

"To say The Hideaway is important to me is an understatement. I'll go to my grave carrying memories of both sweet, miraculous love and deep, aching loss in my heart, and the house has been a witness to it all." (44)

We tend to think of our parents and grandparents as always being the way we know them after we come into their lives. We forget that they had lives, often quite different ones, before we were a part of them.

The Hideaway by Lauren Denton is the story of Sara who returns to Sweet Bay, Alabama after her strange grandmother, Mags, dies and leaves Sara her run down bed and breakfast that has become a senior citizen commune with a revolving door. Mags last request is that Sara return, use her talents and skills to renovate the house and property to its fullest potential and live there while the renovations are taking place.

After returning to The Hideaway to fulfill her grandmothers last wishes, she stumbles upon a box filled with curious items that belonged to Mags. These items point to a very different person than Sara believed her grandmother to be. Her first inkling that perhaps Mags was not quite who she thought she was occurred at the funeral where a photo of her is displayed. In it, Mags is in her early twenties and smiling at the person taking the photo in a way that clearly showed how much she loved the person taking the photo. Sara also realizes how much she resembles Mags much more than either of her parents who died tragically when she was twelve.

The Hideaway switches from the present to 1960 where we learn what the items in the box are and how they made Mags into the courageous, strong woman that she became. During the course of the book, Sara questions what she thought of her grandmother and what she believes true happiness is and where it can be found.

I gave The Hideaway five stars. It is a beautiful story of love, kindness and becoming the person you were meant to be. Oh, and I loved the cover; it was perfect.
