To Brother Pacificus of the Abbey of St. Benet's in Norfolk, it looks like his abbey alone will be spared dissolution. But this last Benedictine house is mired in murder and intrigue. Then when Pacificus falls under suspicion, more than his own dark past comes to light, while the body count keeps rising. Pacificus's fate becomes entwined with that of three local children after their parents are arrested for treason and heresy. Protected only by this errant monk, a mysterious leper, and a Dutch eel-catcher, the children must quickly adjust; seeking their own identity, they soon find that neither parents nor protectors are quite what they seem.
Based on historical events, this post-medieval mystery is laced with romance, fueled by greed, and punctuated with bouts of feasting, smuggling, and jailbreak.

DonnaGeorgiaAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Historical christian fictionMay 4, 2016DonnaGeorgiaAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A historical fictional novel based on historical events set in 1536 during the time of Reformation England where King Henry VIII has been declared the head of the Church of England. The Heretic's are Christians who want to be able to read the Bible in their own language and practice their faith. Anyone who does not obey the Kings correct religion are tortured and killed.
The main character to me was Pacificus previously known as Sir Hugh Erpingham a knight who is hiding his past and dark secrets as a Benedictine Monk.
There are many characters good and bad and their stories are within the story. Characters that live in fear, facing dangers even death.
The author has done an amazing job in writing this epic story of brutality, murder, intrigue, history, faith and romance. Although this book is a little over 600 pages it is so worth your time to read it. I really liked it.
I received a copy of this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.

I loved the characters once I figured out who everyone was. Get through the first few chapters and then you will love the suspense and the romance in this historical fiction book during Reformation England. I hope to read more books by Henry Vyper-Brooks. I received this book from book fun.org for a fair and honest opinion.

The story and vivid descriptions help make it stand out.The theme in the book is religious freedom and the difficulties one can encounter. The reader witnesses the struggles the characters go through as they wrestle with their faith. At times death is the option they take.
The book does contain some graphic descriptions and some language but it is not out of line with the story line.

I usually prefer reading a story to seeing it on TV or film, but this is one story that would make a wonderful mini-series. The author is so descriptive in the details of the environment, characters, and events that I would love to see it all come to life. The story is dark and menacing in many places, but true to the time period and history buffs will love the retelling of these early years in Christianity. The persecution of Christians during those dark days is felt throughout the book and my admiration for those living through it while holding on to their faith grew as I read. There are so many sub-plots throughout sometimes hard to follow, but worth the effort! There are many twists and turns to the story which kept me reading and involved with the characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated with this era.

S WPAGender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5An Amazing Adventure into a very dark time in history.February 12, 2015S WPAGender: FemaleThe Heretic by Henry Vyner-Brooks was an incredible journey taking place in England during the 1500s. This book was based on historical events and real people. I definitely learned a lot of history from this amazingly well written historical novel. The life of monks during this time period was fascinating. The only thing that I had wished for was a glossary for so many terms that I was unfamiliar with. The action scenes were awesome and actually had my heart racing. The characters were powerful and the mystery surrounding them was intriguing. My favorite character was Pacificus; a monk with a dark secret. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in this era.
