World-renowned Jesus scholar Marcus J. Borg shows how we can live passionately as Christians in today's world by practicing the vital elements of Christian faith.
For the millions of people who have turned away from many traditional beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, but still long for a relevant, nourishing faith, Borg shows why the Christian life can remain a transforming relationship with God. Emphasizing the critical role of daily practice in living the Christian life, he explores how prayer, worship, Sabbath, pilgrimage, and more can be experienced as authentically life-giving practices.
Borg reclaims terms and ideas once thought to be the sole province of evangelicals and fundamentalists: he shows that terms such as "born again" have real meaning for all Christians; that the "Kingdom of God" is not a bulwark against secularism but is a means of transforming society into a world that values justice and love; and that the Christian life is essentially about opening one's heart to God and to others.
MARCUS J. BORG is canon theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, and Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture, emeritus, at Oregon State University. A Fellow of the Jesus Seminar, Borg has been national chair of the Historical Jesus section of the Society of Biblical Literature and is the author of the bestselling books Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, The Heart of Christianity, Jesus, and Speaking Christian. ANDY WHITTEN1 Stars Out Of 5November 13, 2009ANDY WHITTENThe heart of Christianity is (drum-roll?) CHRIST! I understand it is the trait and even roll, I suppose, of the wisdom of the flesh to deny Christ His proper place and devalue his work upon the cross, but this book is particularly bothersome because it so slyly attempts to give merit to Jesus as "person," while completely denying his as Lord. If Christ is not the center of Christianity, then the whole of the Christian faith are truly lost and living a life of tedium unto an end which Mr. Borg himself cannot illustrate, for to him our "end" is completely unknowable, since Christ Jesus, as Lord and Creator, is unknown. I did appreciate an important point he brought out, and that concerns the focus of many Christians on the time to come (the "hereafter) rather than the life we now have. We do the world, so greatly in need of hope and a savior, a great disservice in ignoring the proclaimed victory we now have, won for us in the person of Jesus Christ. Borg, sadly, does the faith a greater disservice with his humanistic, "me"-focused theology. We are called to keep ourselves from idols...Borg has built (rebuilt, actually, as his heresy is no new one) an idol that's seductively attractive, and yet when further examined, is as powerless and meaningless as Oz's wizard, working behind his curtain. Borg's god is no different, and denying Christ's lordship while espousing the "heart" of a wholesome "Christian" life is tiresome and, far worse, misleading to say the least...
