Freedom in the Gospel
June 22, 2015
An excellent book to understand the meaning and power of the gospel preaching alone without adding rainbows and sunshines like many other preachers like to add to make the gospel look more appealing to the world. People like to listen what THEY want to listen, but only the full truth sets you free in Christ alone. This is a good recommendation to anyone who is purely intrested of rooting him/herself to the Word of God alone and not seek things which have been added to the gospel to make ourself "feel" better. It's not about our feelings but the truth . And truth comes by hearing not by feeling. And that's exactly the point of this book, to realize how powerful God works with the saving gospel ONLY without some cherry on the top only while the cake is falling apart.
Washer's treatment of the Gospel, and the depth which he digs into it are fantastic. This book helped me in a great way to understand the depth and importance of the Gospel, and it has had an impact on the way I preach. I was intrigued to buy it after listening to one of Washer's sermons online in which he identified the pain, rejection, and wrath of God that Jesus felt on the cross from God the Father. Washer linked many of the old testament curses in Deuteronomy to what Jesus felt on the cross. Much more powerful in the book than I can describe here. I really feel Washer did not leave any stone unturned when exploring the gospel. I've already bought the second of the series, and I can't wait for the third. Anyone seeking to understand the gospel deeper, and are looking to center their preaching/teaching around the gospel, this book is for you.
The LORD was pleased to use Paul Washer pivotally in my conversion several years ago, beginning with his "Shocking Youth Message" video. I have since watched much of his material online. This book is a well ordered presentation of the gospel truths he has been compelled to proclaim.
In the United States especially we have generally exchanged to Biblical gospel of the glory of Christ in all its fullness, power, necessity, centrality, and sufficiency for a diluted presentation which lacks power to save in proportion to its lack of completeness next to the Biblical standard. The evidence of this is clear all around us - knock on every door in your neighborhood and how many would say that they are Christians? When we look at the nation at large and the society around us, do we actually believe this? Are we ourselves ignorant of the "Power and Message" of the gospel?
Paul Washer seeks to set forth the full gospel from cover to cover, and succeeds as much as many man can in handling the greatest truth in all creation. If you want to deepen your love of Christ, your knowledge of God, your thankfulness for the grace of God, your apprehension of the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe...read this book.
While this book can be read by anyone, it is by no means "a book for beginners." If you think the exposition of the gospel is for beginners, you need this book most of all.
May the Lord God bless this book to your edification.
