Product Description

In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism.

This volume, like each in the series, is supplemented by features designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and other forms of ministry.

I used this book to supplement my Lenten Study of the Gospel of John, with videos from Fr. Francis Martin (The Word Proclaimed Institute). This has been such a gift, full of grace. It will help you to learn how to pray through Scripture not just read it; and with prayer and this book you will encounter our Triune God. This book and the lectures helped me to a meaningful experience of God's mercy and love. Thank you Fr. Francis and Mr. Wright!

My criticism of this volume is that it is cheaply bound. However, the actual content is outstanding. This commentary is contemporary, good prose, and thorough without becoming technical. There are many interesting excurses and side-bar discussions and good liturgical links for those who worship in that context. The one other attribute that is unfortunate is that the base text is NAB(RE). That is a minor issue that does not detrimentally impact the value of the work. This has become my go-to commentary on the Gospel of John in my library.
