There are many books about prayer available now, and some books of collections of prayers. This book is constructed in the more ancient tradition, a continuous line of prayer for every day of the year, every season, every "hour" of the day.

As in many world religions, the "hours" refer to specific times during the day when the whole community takes time to pray according to a pattern. This very old Christian manner of prayer includes psalms and readings from Scripture along with prayers, some very, very old and some newly written.

Benedictine monasteries have been the source and carriers of the tradition within Christianity, and this little book manages to condense elements of prayer which can be found world-around. It is simple, yet full. For those who have no idea how to pray in this manner, it is a textbook. For those who want to participate in the very bloodstream of Christian prayer, they offer a place to start and a place to carry on, even for a lifetime.

Do not be afraid of its "Catholic" origins. There is only one Jesus, only one God. A daily prayer practice supports our search for God in our life. I recommend it strongly.
