The Giver tells the story of a dystopian world where everyone lives a life of "sameness," which dulls their emotions and removes traces of individuality. Careers, spouses, and children are given, not picked, and everyone conforms. However, when twelve-year-old Jonas receives the job of the Receiver of Memory, he begins to understand the dark, complex secrets that lie behind his community.
