Publisher's Description

"I’ll read anything Mary Weber writes. More please!" —JAY ASHER, New York Times bestselling author of Thirteen Reasons Why

The line between virtual & reality is about to EVAPORATE.

In a world where skycams follow your every move and the details of your life are uploaded each hour, Sofi knows that her eyes are the only caring ones watching her brother, Shilo. As an online gamer, she works behind the scenes to protect Shilo as he competes in a mix of real and virtual blood sport. But when a bomb destroys the gaming arena, she is helpless to rescue him—and certain that his disappearance was no accident. Despite all the evidence of Shilo’s death, Sofi ’s nightmares tell her he is still alive. Could the dreams be truer than what everyone else claims?

For Miguel—a charming young playboy from Earth—the games are of a different sort. As Ambassador to the Delonese, his career has been built on trading secrets. In the aftermath of the bombing, he fears he has lost Sofi forever, even as he wonders if she is really who she seems. Now he’s a target for blackmail. The game is simple: help the blackmailers or lose more than anyone can fathom—or than Earth can afford.

Step into a universe of diverse characters, alien invasions, and high-stakes video gaming. Because when technology reigns, nothing is as true as it seems—and fantasy can become reality after all.

Author Bio

Mary Weber is the author of the Scholastic Pick, Christy, Carol, and INSPY Award winning young adult novel, Storm Siren, and the Storm Siren Trilogy. As a conference and avid school speaker, Weber’s passion is helping others find their voice amid a too-loud world. In her spare time she sings 80s songs to her three muggle children and ogles her husband, who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking tacos, Joss Whedon, and the ocean. Editorial Reviews

'A cool vision of future Earth that realistically reflects an increasingly multicultural world.'
'Readers will wonder what will happen with each turn of the page. Suspenseful and romantic, this intense story should intrigue teen and adult fans of Caragh O’Brien’s Vault of Dreamers series.'
'Weber’s world-building, complete with political overtones, betrayal, blackmail, sexual tension, genetic testing, and questions regarding the sanctity of human life vs. technical advancement, will leave readers lost in thought and pondering the outcome of Sofi’s mission.'

NOT what I expected of a Christian YA Fiction (speculative) book

This book's rating floated around the 1.5 and 2 star review. Out of mercy I give it 2. It is an okay book.

I chose this book because I wanted a Christian speculative story for my son to read. And I was duped. This is NOT a Christian story, despite it being published under the line Thomas Nelson. There were no hints, references, or even allegorical themes that hinted at a Christian faith or any faith for that matter.

The other things were the thinly veiled use of language. "Heck" and "gad" were the chosen favorites that were quite abundant to replace the worldlier uses of "hell" (taken out of context) and "God". The one use of "WTF" was quite startlingly; used early on and in what I had assumed at the time to be a Christian market book. "Freaking", although mild by today's standards, was used liberally throughout and this is usually not what readers of Christian fiction expect or want. And to top it off, which almost made me throw down the book, is the use of "p*****" out of context. I abhor that word. To me it is the most vulgar and crudest word to express the emotion of anger.

Other than the language, some of the scenes that alluded to sex seemed a little more mature than what I would have given a YA book.

If this was a book on the regular market, I would have hesitated to even pick it up. I don't expect the more secular writers to raise above what sells on the market; but as I mentioned, this was marketed as Christian fiction.

I will say that the writing is sound for a YA book. The scenes do push the story forward. The only hitch on that thread is that the ending was a little too abrupt for my liking.

Would I recommend this book? No.

Would I read any other books by this author? Probably not based on this book's contents.

Talk about a book hangover! I have spent the last few days trying to sort through all the emotions and feelings this book evoked in me.

Sofi Snow is a young woman with a lot of confusion about her self worth. She has had her fair share of rejection in life. Miguel had been satisfied with his life...that is until he met Sofi. As their lives get thrown into a web of lies, deceit, blackmail, and hidden agendas. Will Sofi and Miguel be able to push their past aside and work together for the future of Earth and all of its inhabitants?

There is SO MUCH that happens in this book. It started off fast paced and ended with a major cliff hanger in the middle of a VERY INTENSE scene. (We do get a little breather from all the action in the middle of the book.) Between Sofi's struggle to find herself, Miguel's determination to be a "new man", and the whole mess with Shiloh...My brain was on overload. There were a few aspects to the story that still sit uneasy with me regarding Sofi and Miguel's past. I do think the situation calls for the background our characters have and I am curious to see how Mary Weber addresses this and where she takes them in the next book.

One of the main themes in this story is Human Trafficking. I commend Mary for addressing the very real and very serious issue that has been swept under the rug for too long. To hear her heart, you will want to read this book! I look forward to reading more from Mary and finding out how Sofi's story ends.

I received a complimentary copy of The Evaporation of Sofi Snow from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Admission: I have read the popular mainstream YA bestsellers. In fact, I try to read most of them before the movie comes out. The Hunger Games, Divergent, Enders Game, The Maze Runner, The Fifth Wave, and more are books Ive read and (for the most part) enjoyed. And I am often in awe of the worlds their imaginations create.

Mary Webers is no exception. Her newest offering takes elements from several of thesealiens, hackers, games of skilland combines them into a creation that draws readers in.

As the book opens, Sofis sole focus is on her brother. A fact readers soon learn is more of a way of life for her. When things go awry, Sofis one goal is to find her brother. Between rebelling against her CEO-focused mother and her protection of her brother, some of her choices are not the best. But, you see and understand the motivation behind those poor choices.

What I loved about this book is how fast it moved. There is some good action with the FanGames, but there are more nuances that keep the pace.

Sofis past with Miguel (the youngest ambassador in earths history); her relationships with her team, her mother, and her brother; and the question the Delonese peoples motivation all kept my interest. Add in that I never quite knew who to trust, and this one was a page-turner.

This is the first book in a duology, so I finished with several questions that I definitely want answered when Sofi, Miguel and the others return in the final book.

    Mind. Blown.

Everyone should stop what they are doing and preorder this book.

    Right. Now.

If you've followed my excellent advice, or you're awesome and have already preordered this, then make sure that your schedule is free and clear. You will not want to set this book down. To be honest, I'm not sure it's physically possible to set it down.

This review is going to reveal a facet of my nerdy geekdom to you guys. I apologize in advance. ;)

The Evaporation of Sofi Snow is like The Hunger Games meets Ender's Game meets Firefly meets Falling Skies meets Stargate! But let me be clear, it has awesome aspects that remind me of these books and TV shows, but it is in no way a copy of them. This novel is unique and original and awesome sauce! My husband is tech savvy and a gamer, so I've picked up a lot of lingo. And I will admit that I have a thing for Nintendo and Metroid. I told you. Geekdom, my friends. Anyways. As soon as I read the premise, I was hooked.

Awesome premise aside, The Evaporation of Sofi Snow overflows with gripping writing and an intense message. Mary Weber attacks the issue of human trafficking in this novel, and I applaud her! This is also a novel about finding yourself. Sofi and Miguel are experiencing the evaporation of their beliefs - beliefs about everything they know. This proves to be terrifying, exhilarating, dangerous, and revitalizing for them. I can't wait to read the next installment!

Five Billion Stars!!! - The Evaporation of Sofi Snow is the first book in Mary Weber's new series, and yeah, read the series in order. The book ends with an extreme cliffhanger that makes me want to scream and rage into the wind. But that's just because I want to read more. NOW! ;) I also want to note for you guys that this is technically ABA (American Book Association), not CBA (Christian Book Association). This book is written for the general market, but it has soul and heart and a deep spiritual message that draws readers closer to Him. Amazing!!!

Another epic story from Mary Weber, The Evaporation of Sofi Snow is a sci-fi adventure right from the start. With an interesting and diverse cast of characters and plenty of twists and turns, the story unfolds with addicting drama, action, and suspenseI flew through the pages of this book as fast as I could (and that cliffhanger didnt help!). And within the science-fiction setting, Weber adds elements of real-world issues and relevant themes. All in all, The Evaporation of Sofi Snow is an excellent readI recommend it to fans of science fiction (and of Mary Webers books) and cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

Thanks to BookLook Bloggers, I received a complimentary copy of The Evaporation of Sofi Snow and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
