Product Description

Handsome appearance counts for naught unless matched by good character and actions. That's the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister's daughter Lavinia Ellison. So even though all the other villagers of St. Hampton Heath are swooning over the newly returned seventh Earl of Hawkesbury, she is not impressed. If a man won't take his responsibilities seriously and help those who are supposed to be able to depend on him, he deserves no respect from her. In Lavinia's pretty, gray eyes, Nicholas Stamford is just as arrogant and reckless as his brother--who stole the most important person in Livvie's world.

Nicholas is weighed down by his own guilt and responsibility, by the pain his careless brother caused, and by the legacy of war he's just left. This quick visit home to St. Hampton Heath will be just long enough to ease a small part of that burden. Asking him to bother with the lives of the villagers when there's already a bailiff on the job is simply too much to expect. That is, until the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. With her angelic voice in his head, he may even be beginning to care. But his isn't the only heart that needs to change.

These two lonely hearts may each have something the other needs. But with society's opposition, ancestral obligations, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles in their way.

Fans of Georgette Heyer, Lori Wick, and Julie Klassen will enjoy the spirited exchanges between the bluestocking minister's daughter and the bruised war hero as they move past pride and presumption to a humbled appreciation of God's grace and the true strength of love.

The Elusive Miss Ellison by Carolyn Miller

This book starts out with Lavinia and she lives with her father the pastor and her aunt Patience.

Story also follows the Earl Nicholas who has come to their town. He's making sure the one in charge is keeping the town buildings up to date and everything is in order.

Lavinia has a sharp tongue and is not like the other young females who take a fancy to Nicholas. She even points out his lack of concern in keeping the buildings up to date.

She has a lot of talents and enjoys some of them. He's smitten with her and she finds herself liking him but always with a bitter tongue.

Sermons in church and ones they all share in. During meals they are able to learn more about Nick's battle background and he learns of Lavinia's teachings during mass to the children, teaching them letters and numbers along with the teachings of God.

Misunderstandings, illness, emergencies and disappearances, twists and turns til they realize what is important to each other. So many mysteries! Love all the travel and descriptions!

Quotes from the Bible help them lean on each other and God for guidance. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

If you have ever read Jane Austen and enjoyed her writing, if you have ever read Georgette Heyer and enjoyed her books, then you need to read 'The Elusive Miss Ellison'. Fans of the Regency era now have a new author to enjoy and new books to look forward to because this is the first book in a new Regency series by Carolyn Miller.

Lavinia (Miss Ellison) and Lord Nicholas Hawkesbury are complex characters with both strengths and flaws and this is what made them so real to me. Lavinia has great faith and tremendous concern for the poor but she is a proud young woman who finds it hard to forgive. Nicholas is proud also but his pride borders on haughtiness because of his social standing. The courage and leadership that Nicholas displayed as a soldier both seem to be missing as he begins to fill his role as the new Earl of Hawkesbury. From their first meeting we are able to witness the romantic tension between Lavinia and Nicholas as they spar with words and the dialogue between them is very humorous. We soon see, however, that 'The Elusive Miss Ellison' has so much more. It also has the elements that fill a classic Regency drama. We see the rules that define each social class and the expectations that each person will remain in their own class. This book, however, has the underlying theme of forgiveness, both human and divine. As we witness these characters' spiritual journeys we are reminded that it is through God's grace that all of us can be forgiven!

I received a copy of this book from The BookClub Network and the author. This review is my own opinion.

This story takes placed mostly in a small town in England in the year 1813. Lavinia Ellison is the daughter of the local reverend. She is used to speaking her mind and is independent and intelligent. She spends her days helping the poor in her town, playing on the pianoforte and helping around the house. She lost her mother in an accident several years ago. The accident involved one of the peerage in town. Lord Nicholas Hawkesbury is new to his title after the death of his older brother. He has come to his country home to put it in order. After he arrives, he begins to realize the sad state of his estates affairs thanks to his brothers spending on other things. He entrusts his steward to see to the repair of tenant homes and planting of fields. After too much time, he finds out his steward is robbing him and not spending the money as Lord Hawkesbury has directed.

Lord Hawkesbury meets Lavinia and they immediately clash. She speaks her mind about his lack of keeping his word to help the tenants. He thinks she is too forward for a lady. Lavinia continues to champion the poor and time and again Lord Hawkesbury says he will do something and then doesnt. Lavinia jumps to conclusions as to the reasons why, which makes for more sparks. Amidst the sparks of irritation are also sparks of attraction. However, Lord Hawkesburys mother has a suitable woman of his station in society all picked out for him to marry. Lavinia is a reverends daughter and not in the same class of society, so she is certainly not an option for a wife. Nicholas longs for Lavinia, but supposes he should do what his mother wants and what society deems appropriate. By spending time with Lavinia, see her compassion and have her speak Scripture to him, even while pointing out his faults, he begins to seek out God.

I could identify with the two main characters in that they were depicted as believable and I could relate to their emotions. They made mistakes, were quick to find the faults in each others character while not seeing their own and speaking without thinking often hurting the others feelings. Just like me sometimes! However, the generosity Lavinia displayed, the compassion for the poor and the self-sacrifice were amazing. Yes, she got caught up in prideful thinking, but once aware of this she tried to act as God would have her act. I also thought her living her faith and not just talking about it was great as then she could stand firm in her beliefs when challenged. The story has a wonderful romance and I cant wait until book two in the series is released! This was a great book that will be going on my keeper shelf.

The Elusive Miss Ellison is not your typical Regency romance! Lavinia Ellison, the village minister's daughter, is a strong protagonist who will be admired for her services to the poor. Nicholas, the Earl of Hawkesbury, is also a strong leading character although I wished he would stand up to his mother! After all, he was the Earl! I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Regency era. I received my book from Kregel Publications through Book Fun. This is my honest opinion.

I love this regency story. That time period was well researched and the author did a fantastic job of creating this wonderful tale.
