Cheryl FloodIllinoisAge: 45-54Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5I give this book a poor rating because....February 14, 2013Cheryl FloodIllinoisAge: 45-54Gender: female......I have no idea whose idea it was to put the teacher's manual at the front of the student workbook, but it was a Very. Poor. Decision. Anytime I wanted to double check an answer I had to take away my children's book and look it up. I could have ripped out those pages in each of my children's books and had the teacher's manual stapled together or something, but then that would make their book lopsided (if you've ever used a consumable workbook and taken out pages, you'll know what I'm talking about.)
Additionally if you have more than one child that you're teaching this to (and presumably that will be the case with a lot of users of this curriculum since it is designed to use with multiple children), that means they'll each have their own workbook - which further means you'll have multiple teacher manuals. Why on earth does the publisher think I need more than one teacher's manual? I think placing it at the beginning of the text book would've been smarter, or as in the case of the Energy unit, it's a completely separate book altogether (my preference).
I hope the publisher changes this, since the way the TM is currently is set up for the Earth unit is really a bad idea.
STheisCentral MinnesotaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Companion to the Student Book!March 15, 2011STheisCentral MinnesotaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The first half of the Teachers Guide and Student Journal includes a black & white small version of each page in the student journal. Objectives, notes, and the answers to the "What Did You Learn?" questions are included below each applicable page.
The second half of the Teachers Guide and Student Journal is the student journal. The pages are perforated so they can be easily removed. Questions from the experiment are repeated here, as well as from the "What Did You Learn" section, with space for the student to write in the answers. The spaces aren't long. I think this will be encouraging for my students--they will realize I'm not expecting them to write paragraphs, but a short sentence or two will do.
Some of the questions are easier, and some will require more thought. I love how it is easily adjustable to each individual child's level. I don't have to think hard about how I can make this work first for my 4th grader and at the same time for my 7th grader. It is also worth mentioning that this is a Christian curriculum and includes scripture references where applicable.
This is by far one of the best curricula I have ever seen for doing experiments. It is so thorough and well put-together. The simple act of following directions, recording observations, making hypotheses, and answering questions are so good by themselves that it almost doesn't matter WHAT we are studying. We will be building a solid foundation for successful lab experiments in the future.
