Publisher's Description

It was the summer of storms and strays and strangers. The summer that lightning struck the big oak tree in the front yard. The summer his mother died in a tragic accident. As he recalls the tumultuous events that launched a surprising journey, Samuel can still hardly believe it all happened.

After his mother's death, twelve-year-old Samuel Chambers would do anything to bring her back. Prompted by three strange carnival fortune-tellers and the surfacing of his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Sam begins his search for the Tree of Life--the only thing that could possibly bring his mother back. His quest to defeat death entangles him and his best friend Abra in an ancient conflict and forces Sam to grapple with an unwelcome question: could it be possible that death is a gift?

Haunting and hypnotic, The Day the Angels Fell explores the difficult questions of life in a voice that is fresh, friendly, and unafraid. With this powerful story, Shawn Smucker has carved out a spot for himself in the tradition of authors Madeleine L'Engle and Lois Lowry.

A smashing success for Shawn Smucker with his debut novel, The Day the Angels Fell! It was beautifully written, plotted brilliantly, and I fell in love with his cast of characters. I was asked minutes after finishing this book how I liked it. My reply was that I haven't read such a fantastic fairy tale in a long time. What was brilliant about this book was that it was an amazingly clever twist off the story of the two cherubim who were left to guard the Tree of Life from the Bible. I tell you, this book is a must read. In trying to find another way to describe it, I would also add that it had some definite ways it reminded me of the Chronicles of Narnia (I don't say that lightly, those have been my all time favourite books since I was five years old).

The story is told from the point of view of an old man - an old man we almost immediately find out is the young boy in the story, Samuel. Samuel is about twelve years old, and he and his best friend are the main drive behind this story. Samuel and Abra find themselves thrust into the craziest adventure of their lives when the veil between physical and spiritual is pulled back and a thousand year old drama begins to play out on the land of Samuel's farm. Ancient foe, heavenly hosts, devilish monsters, legend, and a supernatural weapon weave their way through Samuel and Abra's summer as they fight to deal with the scenario they find themselves at the head of.

The Day the Angels Fell is clever enough for an adult or teen to be fully engrossed. The content could have been written quite easily for an older audience, but the way Shawn Smucker penned this book I would be comfortable giving it to a young teen, no problem. There are some mature questions asked about right and wrong, "just because you can do something, should you?", what is death?, is death a gift or a curse?, and so on... The Day the Angels fell definitely made me think in addition to thoroughly entertaining me. I really hope that this book is the start of a long series (ten or more books please!). Congratulations to Shaw Smucker and his team for an excellent job well done. I am quite spellbound and waiting for me.

Thank-you to Baker Publishing House and Graf Martin Communications for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you are a fan of supernatural fiction then you will be pleased to know that there is a new voice in the field. Shawn Smucker makes his debut with The Day The Angels Fell. Supernatural fiction is really not my thing but I enjoyed the story and felt like it was a quick read.

The story is told from the perspective of Samuel Chambers. He's an old man about to attend the funeral of his last friend. Due to age and circumstance he is reflecting over the events that surrounded the death of his mother. It was a summer that would change the course of his life and those around him.

As I said before it is a work of supernatural fiction so expect that in the writing. I thought Mr. Smucker did a good job of working those elements into the story without making it weird. The overall theme is that death is a gift. That may sound strange at first but after reading the novel I appreciate that phrase.

If you can check your theology at the door and just read this title as a work of fiction I think you will enjoy it. The writing is good and the characters are engaging. Once you start the story I think you'll be hard pressed to put it down.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

The Day the Angels Fell was a whimsical, fantastical kind of tale that I have not read the likes of in a very long time. This was a story of life and death, good and evil, and truth and lies. Bad things and accidents happen all the time in our world and we really have no power to stop it. Here we have a young boy, Sam, who has gone through the unexpected death of his mother. Throwing his world off kilter and now living in this new nightmarish reality, Sam would do anything to get his mom back and pay any cost for that.

Enter certain shady and secretive characters that just may be able to help Sam and his dad out but possibly at a price that neither would want to pay.

Reading like a modern day fairy tale, Sam with his best friend Abra, embark on an adventure where neither one knows the consequences or the extent of the evil that follows them as they choose to find the Tree of Life.

This was written very well and kept me engaged and is a story that I think tweens, teens, and adults will enjoy. Sprinkled with sadness, a bit of creepiness, and ultimately hope this would be a great book to read and discuss with your kids.

I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions expressed are my own.

It will be very hard for me to go a year before finding out what happens in the next book in this series. I did not want to put this book down. This seems to be more of a book for teens but I feel that adults will like it also. My favorite character was Abra. She is a great girl. Samuel has a lot to learn in this book. This is great Christian suspense. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

This story is not something that I would typically pick out to read, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the distinctive storytelling and prose of this new author. His descriptions are interesting and craft a depth to the story that is appreciated and admired. The overarching themes of death and the process of dying are explored in a unique and remarkable way. The plot sweeps the reader away to another time and place. Because the style is so different, it may take a little extra time to get into the novel, but I encourage readers to continue until the end. I look forward to more from this author.
