Product Description

Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ met face-to-face with people just like you. Broken, imperfect, sometimes fearful and without hope. The Day I Met Jesus is a beautifully crafted narrative that chronicles the remarkable encounters of five women in the Gospels who were desperate to find wholeness, security and purpose. Like all of us, these women struggled with regrets of their pasts, stresses of their presents, and the worries about their tomorrows. If you are someone who seeks a renewal of hope, faith, and love, The Day I Met Jesus will make your Bible come to life and usher you into a fresh encounter with your Lord. Large Print Edition.

Publisher's Description

So many of us suffer from an intense spiritual inferiority complex. We are insecure about God's love for us. We don't understand our true worth in his eyes. We struggle with guilt over mistakes we've made. We are ashamed of our own lack of devotion or fervor. We want Jesus to light the flame of love in our hearts, to feel as we did when we first received his salvation.
On the other hand, following Jesus has become stale and familiar to countless Christians today. The flame of first love has waned and our zeal for the Lord has cooled. We need to be inspired and challenged to utterly abandon our lives to Jesus anew.
With a deep sense of awe and a fierce intimacy, this unique book explores five women in the Gospels whose encounters with Jesus revolutionized their lives. Through their imagined diaries, readers get a glimpse of the inner thoughts of the Samaritan woman, the woman caught in adultery, the prostitute, the woman with an issue of blood, and Mary of Bethany. Readers meet these women in their most desperate moments and feel the captivating love and forgiveness of their Savior, revealing how Jesus intersects their lives.

This book is very well written and thought provoking. However, the authors have created fictional stories to elaborate on the details of the Biblical stories. I have heard friends use the fictional details as fact in my Sunday school class. It bothers me that people have read the fictional account and are taking that for the details of the Biblical account when it was something that was made up.

Ive long been a fan of biblical fiction for its propensity to draw me back to The Word. It gives me a deeper understanding of the text, the culture, and attitudes of the peoples in that time period. If good biblical fiction points the reader to Christ, then the team of Mary Demuth and Frank Viola have placed Jesus under a flashing neon sign!

We are enamored with personal stories because they create an emotional bond between the receiver and the message. Author Mary Demuth capitalizes on this inherent human trait when she artfully composed the fictional diaries of five women who appear in the Gospels. By giving them a voice she adds substantial depth to the stories of scripture that we have become over familiar with. This allows her readers to see these women and Jesus more clearly.

As the fiction story ends, the reader is pointed back to scripture to read the biblical account. At this point, author Frank Viola aids the reader in Walking It Out. He does this by highlighting the audacity of Christ to reach out to the worst kinds of outcasts prostitutes, adulterers, those deemed unclean, unworthy and even the simple fact that they were women! What happened at the intersection of sin and grace rocked the lives of those who encountered it, encountered Him. The Day I Met Jesus is a poignant reminder of the lengths God will go to reach the lost.

This book will inspire you to reengage with scripture and its Author. Through both the fictional and theological aspects, The Day I Met Jesus encourages us to accept our identity in Christ, to view our salvation with renewed gratitude, and to see the value God places on all of His children individually. With a new appreciation for the Message, allow these stories to penetrate your heart to root out the Pharisee within and transform you.

"No man has ever spoken words like this man. His words feed life; they behold hope; they gush truth." ~

Thus speaks the Samaritan Woman whom tradition names Photine.

Sometimes when I read the Gospel narratives, they seem distant and strange. It's hard to still my soul and hear His words in all their power.

The woman at the well, the woman with the issue of blood, the woman caught in adultery, and Mary of Bethany- they heard Him.

They sought Him, they were found by Him, and on the day they met Jesus, their world changed.

Mary DeMuth and Frank Viola have given each woman- known by a few brief and timeless lines in Scripture- a fuller story.

One that gives them back their humanity, providing them with hopes and fears and a past and a future.

Otherwise, they're just black and white text to us.

The goal of this book is to help you "see" these women as they meet Him, and then to encounter Him for yourself.

And along the way, they crafted a keeper of a Bible study- the kind that compels good reading.

The way Mary uses words is beautiful... listen to the thoughts of one woman set free by God.

"I ran to the outskirts of Nain under a full moon and twirled under it's shadow a free woman, so blessedly alive it nearly scared me to death."

    Don't you love that visual?

Don't you want to meet the joyous, good, gentle, mighty God who provokes such life in His people?

Jesus is the one who "tells us our stories straight, and with that, changes the endings forever."

Thanks to Him, we can live "stolen lives, given to us by the Author of life."

I have been blessed by Baker Publishing with a review copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

My favorite form of historical fiction is by far a retelling of stories from the Bible. Authors Liz Curtis Higgs, Francine Rivers, and Jill Eileen Smith have all made fictionalized retelling of scripture a fine art. The Day I Met Jesus places Frank Viola and Mary Demuth in equally standing with my long time favorites. I knew from the moment I saw the cover that this was a must read for me.

    From The Back Cover

Join Frank Viola and Mary Demuth on a fascinating journey back in time as they retell the dramatic accounts of five women who met Jesus. Each narrative is told from each womans unique perspective, yet tightly grounded in the Gospel accounts and faithful to first century history. Elegantly written and profoundly stirring, this book blends creative narrative with uncommon insight, spiritual depth, and practical application.

I loved so many things about this book. To start, I so enjoyed how each story was told. Through the fictionalized retelling, I learned what the life of each woman might have been like prior to meeting Jesus. This made each woman from scripture feel like a person I might know instead of someone from long ago, distant and unrelatable. Further, I appreciated the actual scripture provided at the end of each diary entry. I was able to read for myself in one place the story the Bible tells. The insight into the story following the scripture allowed me to fill in details and reflect in a way I hadnt before. Lastly, I was thrilled to find a study guide of sorts in the last pages. I am excited to use this book as a study with Bible Study group.

In case you are curious, the five women included are the woman caught in adultery, a prostitute, the Samaritan woman Jesus meets at the well, the woman with the issue of blood, and Mary, the woman whom Jesus loved. Each diary entry was fascinating, but I must say, I was most moved by the woman caught in adultery. It was my favorite of the five.
