In 1776 the Founders of this country never heard or thought of any such thing as a secular nation. Before the French Revolution, a secular nation had never existed. Yet many today believe that America was founded as, and remains a secular nation. But it wasn't until 1947 that the phrase separation of church and state became part of our American jurisprudence, and has been used repeatedly to remove Christianity from the public sphere.
