Better Than Most But Not As Good As "The Christmas Candle"
December 31, 2016
Better than most Christmas romance movies hokey with fake snow and below-average acting only somewhat salvaged by the Christmas theme and occasionally good locations, this film is at least wholesome and several of my Christian friends really like it though to me it's just okay and I passed it on after enjoying the Christmas, winter, and logging themes and the four main actors --
though "Mary Tyler Moore Show" Lou Grant actor Ed Asner disturbingly overweight and Lois Nettleton too much plastic surgery, her beauty not allowed to age gracefully but her personality still effervescent. The two young actors, unknown to me, are appealingly attractive and genuine; but the directing is slow and lacks the spontaneity it embarassingly attempts, the casting so uncomfortably wrong for the other guy that I felt more sorry for him than rooting for the lovebirds though a proud US Army daughter myself; and the ingredients all here for a better film fell flat in my estimation.
Yet one mature Christian friend says this film lights the Christmas season for her; and a younger, Catholic, worldly friend enjoyed crying through it. So I hope you enjoy it too, if you try it. Merry Christmas :)
