What is it about romance set among the backdrop of the war? Perhaps its the sensing that time is of the essence and it inspires people to share their truth heartfelt feelings with one another in the event that they will be taken from them far too soon. If you're like me and LOVE that nostalgic romance set during WWII, then pick up Melody Carlson's novel, The Christmas Blessing. It is set in San Diego during 1944 with that romantic couple who have met and instantly fallen in love. Yet before they can marry, James Bradley is called back to his base to be deployed without a moment's notice.

Poor Amelia Richards has a completed intent to wed certificate that James filled out and knows that hopefully this war will end soon and James will return so they can marry. But fate is that ugly judge of what will happen and Amelia learns that James has died and will not be coming home. Now she has to deal with the outcome of what she will be able to do, when she realizes that their one night of romance has conceived a son from that night. As a single mother, not even being able to claim war widow status, she remembers that James told her a bit about her family that lives in Montana and she is sure that perhaps they might even want to help her and poor Jimmie out.

As she plans on making the trip to Montana she isn't sure what she will do if James' parents don't believe her or worse, attempt to take Jimmie away seeing as she is not even married. How could she possibly afford to take care of Jimmie when they don't even know what will happen next. So she takes what money she has in an attempt to give it ago while she searches for James parents, until then she will simply stay a few days at the cheapest hotel in hopes of finding a job as a beautician locally and fate will smile favorably on her this time. What she doesn't plan on is that she is coming down with a pretty horrible cold and now it seems she has passed it along to Jimmie. Without any funds how will she be able to provide care for both of them.

I received The Christmas Blessing by Melody Carlson compliments of NetGalley and Revell Publishing Group, a division of Baker Publishing. This is such a wonderful story and I don't want to give any more away. The setting is heartwarming and the overall situation is completely believable as something that probably happened to many young men and women during the 1940's. Fans of anything relating to WWII will absolutely adore this short novel that really feels like so much more. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars and reminds you that God can even work a miracle during the most tumultuous of times.

    MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Amelia Richards was an independent woman, but when she learns her boyfriend and babys father was shot down in the war, she was all alone, knowing nothing about the babys fathers family.

As usual, Melody Carlson writes a gripping story that will have readers engulfed in the story until the very last page, wanting to know what happens to Amelia and her baby. This is a very well written story, the only thing is, I was wishing for a longer story and more details. But for a novella, this is a sweet wonderful story of love, patience and endurance. As well as love and surprises. I highly recommend this book for anyone to read. And though it is written as a Christmas story, it can be read anytime of the year.

I received this book from Revell Publishers to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 55.

Melody Carlson is one of my favorite authors so Ill read any of her books without having to know anything about it. The Christmas Blessing is this years Christmas novella. If you enjoy Hallmark movies, then this would probably be for you. It deals with a somewhat heavy topic about a young woman who is grieving the death of her fiance and longs for a better life for her baby. Its a quick read (I read it in only a matter of hours), super light, and cheesy cute. Its more of a contemporary than a romance although there is a tiny bit of that.

While I enjoyed this, it wasnt my favorite nor do I think this was Melody Carlsons best. It was well done for a novella, but there were some areas that I wish she explained a little more in detail. I wanted to know what landed Amelia into such poverty and why she was so desperate. I enjoyed that this was a World War II novella and that we had characters who were Navy pilots. I thought the ending was a little rushed and was disappointed to see hardly any of the spiritual content that the author is known for. It is a story of hope, love, and grace.

If you enjoy a light and quick reads, then Id recommend this for you.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Christmas season just wouldn't seem complete without reading a Christmas novella from Melody Carlson. This year's offering is an historical romance set during WWII. The story is one that happened all too often during that time.

Amelia is working at the USO when she meets Navy pilot James and quickly falls in love. The two plan to marry but before they can go to the Justice of the Peace James has to ship out. Soon after James is MIA and presumed dead. And if things couldn't get worse Amelia discovers she's pregnant.

When the story begins we find Amelia struggling to provide for her and little Jimmy. She's a beautician but having a tiny baby isn't the easiest thing to juggle along with working. She's decided to head to Montana to possibly meet James' family and perhaps make a fresh start.

Poor Amelia sustains blow after blow until she ultimately can't stand back up again. She has agonizing decisions to make that force her to set aside her hopes and dreams and choose a selfless path.

As with all of Melody's stories this one tugged at the heartstrings and wound up being a lovely ending. (You can't have an awful ending for a Christmas story!) I'm once again impressed with her ability to pack so much into a small story without it feeling rushed. If you are a lover of Christmas stories treat yourself to this one. It would also make a wonderful little Christmas gift for someone that needs a little lift this time of year.

Debs Dozen: Unmarried woman, young baby, fianc dead, no money, nowhere else to go.

Melody Carlson has written a poignant story, The Christmas Blessing, about a young woman during World War II. While living in San Diego, Amelia had met and fallen in love with a young pilot. A wartime romance, short and sweet. Theyd acquired their marriage license and planned to be married the next day. But James got orders to report for active duty that night. He left for war and left her pregnant.

Not wanting the stigma of being an unwed mother, Amelia quit her job as a beautician and moved across town to another salon. But she knew she needed more for her baby, Jimmy, named after his dad. Eventually, she found out Jamess plane had gone down and he was lost. Practically destitute, unwilling to lean on the support of her roommate any longer, she headed out by train to the small town of Rockford where Jamess parents lived. Amelia hoped they would accept her and her son.

While on the train, Amelias wallet was stolen with the remainder of her savings and what money shed received from selling her engagement ring and buying a plain gold band. What was she going to do now? She didnt want to just present herself and her son on her in-laws doorstep, but her money was almost gone and her son was ill.

The Christmas Blessing is a sweet, sweet story. Formulaic to be sure, but worth the read. Amelia is a lovable woman and her father-in-law, Doctor Bradley, a prince of a man. Her mother-in-law? Well Melody has written a Christmas novella that should stand the test of time. Three stars.

Melody Carlson is a much-published author with over two hundred books and six million copies sold. Several of her books are Christmas stories. She and her husband live in central Oregon.

Revell Books gave me a copy of The Christmas Blessing, but I was in no way obligated to write a review.
