Howard G. Hendricks (1924-2013) was distinguished professor emeritus of Christian education and leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he founded the Center for Christian Leadership. He wrote or edited numerous books, including Teaching to Change Lives and Living by the Book.

    This book is a wonderful book!

    I. I really love this book and I would like to share chapter 1: Following the Master Teacher in which I have learned the most and this chapter is the chapter in which I have learned and something in this chapter can be applied in the skills of TEACHING or my teaching as the following:

    1) Jesus was a man with:

    a) Jesus was congruent: What Jesus said and did was one.

    b) Jesus was reality-oriented. Studying the life of Jesus, always returns us to reality.

    c) Jesus was relational: Jesus knew that the greatest relate for truth was relationships.

    2) Jesus' Message:

    a) His Message was revealed. Jesus becomes the conduit for the communication of divine truth while affirming a continuity between Himself and the Father: "I and the Father are One"

    b) His message was relevant.

    c) His message was authority.

    d) His message was effective.

    3) Jesus' Motive:

    a) His Motive is the Motive of love

    b) The motive of Acceptance.

    c) The Motive of Affirmation

    4) Jesus' Methods:

    a) Jesus' Teaching was creative.

    b) Jesus' Teaching was engaging

    c) Jesus' Teaching was developmental.

    II. In this book, I have found the Principles of Teaching can apply to our church or our teaching as the following since they will help us to apply creative teaching methods for our church:

    1) Understand the Criteria: Lesson Aims and Objectives, Number of Learners, Size of the Classroom, Allotted Time, Equipment and Facilities, Resources and Curriculum. Location of the room. Age of Learners, Climate of the group (How long have these people studied together as a class? Evaluate the level of trust, confidence, expectation, and commitment before selecting a method), Teachers (how many teachers are available)

    2) Understand The Learning Process: Approach, Explore, Discover, Assume Responsibility.

    3) Understand The Teaching Schedule: Early Childhood, Children (Grade 1-6), Youth / Adult (Grade 7-12/ College and Above)

    4) Choose Appropriate Methods.

    5) Evaluation.

    III. I think Chapter 15 of this book: The teacher as Discipler may help TEACHERS OR PROMOTION OF FACULTY TEACHING SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE themselves and the Church:

    The Element of the Teacher-Discipler's Ministry in which teachers nourish relationships with students so that spiritual growth take place:

    a) The Element of Consecration: The Teacher-discipler as shepherd.

    b) The Element of Affection: The Teacher-discipler as friend.

    c) The Element of Demonstration: The Teacher-discipler as model

    d) The Element of Ministration: The Teacher-discipler as servant.

    e) The Element of Integration: The Teacher-discipler as unifier of truth.

    IV. Finally, I have found five things I have learned from the book that I have read can help me on the POSSIBILITY of sermon and teaching GOD'S WORD or compiling documents to TEACH:

    1) Jesus' motive was Love in His Teaching: Jesus always had the best interests of the one loved paramount in His Relationship.

    2) Jesus' motive was Acceptance: Acceptance is the first step of effective teaching.

    3) Jesus' Teaching was creative.

    4) Jesus' Teaching was engaging.

    Jesus' Teaching was developmental.

    This is an excellent resource for those in charge of or invovled in a Sunday school ministry. Great guidelines for a Christ honoring ministry. It clearly explained how people learn from a Christian perspective.
