The problem with the Easter story is that for it to work as a joyous occasion you have to accept two stories. Firstly the death of Jesus, something physical with which people can easily identify, and then the resurrection of Jesus, understanding of which requires faith. Without faith, the events speak of failure, with faith, they speak of triumph.
James Montgomery Boice, one of the church's master communicators, here explains the drama, purpose and events surrounding Easter - so that more can see the two stories interplay, so that more can see the occasion as one of spiritual joy.

You have to hunt for the message of Easter. After all, this is not the joyous welcoming of a baby with the giving of gifts; this is the brutal death of a young man, stripped of any gifts and dignity. Yet, Jews had prayed for him, hoped for him, looked for him and lived for him for generations. But now the one who said he was Messiah was dead, killed by the very ones who had for so long anticipated his coming. How could this have happened? His disciples had spent 3 years following him. and here they were in despair - but then they found the empty tomb. James Boice, one of the church's master communicators, explains the drama, purpose and events surrounding Easter so that it can become an occasion of spiritual joy.
"Easter messages that rejoice in Christ's victory, glory in his grace, and celebrate his resurrection, knowing that on the first Easter Sunday morning he accomplished the redemption of those who placed their trust in him." --Cyril J. Barber
James Montgomery Boice (BA Harvard; BD Princeton; ThD University of Basel) was the pastor of historic 10th Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia PA. Although he died in the year 2000, he can still be heard today on the radio ministry 'The Bible Study Hour.'
