"Because you are good, and faithful, and not self-seeking." (300)

Another wonderful read by Carolyn Miller! Regency & gothic fans of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights will want to pick up the next Legacy of Grace novel, The Captivating Lady Charlotte. I'm a little surprised only because the first book of the series, The Elusive Miss Ellison seems to have such a different vibe than this second one. Yet, the author's writing style is still evident. I'm not the biggest fan of the characters in this second installment, minus the reemergence of the main characters in book 1, Lavinia and Nicholas. I did get a kick out of this little assessment of Lavinia by Charlotte:

"She possessed a measure of grace that seem to permit her to smile and turn the other cheek, even as she must surely writhe inside." (9)

Despite not loving the characters, I find the this book captivating enough to overlook it completely, just like I did with Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. What stood out was, yes, the storyline, but it had more to do with the message of love that brewed and manifests through the pages.

"Real love perseveres through the hard times, never giving up. True love trusts." (303)

It's profound and with such depth that it stops you in your tracks after you turn the last page and contemplate a bit. I can tell you the sensitivity on this subject mixed with the boldness of one's courage in faith and hope, well, the author had me in awe. With that said, I look forward to Book 3, The Dishonorable Miss Delaney with quite the anticipation.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.

Such an amazing book! Such a talented author! Ms. Miller has a way of putting forth her characters' feelings such that you can relate to BOTH parties, see BOTH sides, and understand exactly how and why a character is feeling and reacting the way they are. One minute I'm frustrated with Charlotte, seeing the Duke's point of view, and the next moment I'm seeing HER point of view and upset with HIM for not understanding!

This, the second in the Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace series, captivated me as wholly as the first (The Elusive Miss Ellison), yet in a completely different way! The characters could not be any more polar opposites to the characters in the first book, yet I cared for them just as deeply and understood and sympathized with them just as well!

"How can this be?" you may ask. My only reply being that I've had this same, strange phenomenon occur while reading Jane Austen novels. Every book is seen "through a different lense", shall we say, and yet each time I'm left feeling that I can understand this character's feelings exactly and I would react in the same way...until I read another character and feel I can understand THEM exactly and I would react in THAT same way.

This series has very quickly climbed it's way onto my Favorite-Regencies list and I only anticipate it's going even higher! (I mean, hello? Book one's villain becomes book three's heroine?! I'm dying here!)

I LOVED this book! It was SO good! Now stop reading this review and get out there and buy yourself a copy!

Following the events and characters first introduced in The Elusive Miss Ellison, The Captivating Lady Charlotte focuses on Lady Charlotte Featherington, Lavinia Ellisons cousin in London. As the daughter of British nobility, Charlotte has significant social obligations, namely to marry an eligible young man. While Charlotte hopes to marry for love and romance, her parents plan for her to marry a man with the proper social connections and rank. As a widowed duke, William Hartwells past has left him leery of young women and their plotting parents, who only see him for his title. However, he finds himself intrigued by Lady Charlotte, even as she seems disinterested in him personally. When dangers arise, Charlotte must ultimately choose between romance or responsibility, even as she discovers that they may not be mutually exclusive.

The second novel of Ms. Millers Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace series, The Captivating Lady Charlotte focuses on the Regency-era social scene of London. Ms. Miller brings the period to life, while seamlessly interweaving strong Christian themes throughout the novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Captivating Lady Charlotte. Ms. Miller writes an intriguing story, with characters that comfortably fit within their Regency-era setting. Similar to novels by Lori Wick and Julie Klassen, Ms. Millers Regency Brides series interweave Christian themes within Regency settings and romantic plotlines. Although I preferred the first novel of the series slightly over this one, The Captivating Lady Charlotte serves as a strong continuation of the series, building upon characters from the first novel and setting up for a fascinating final volume to be released later this year. While this novel may serve as a stand-alone story, readers will appreciate the connections that Ms. Miller makes between this book and The Elusive Miss Ellison. Personally, I really enjoyed seeing those characters continue to grow and change within the extended storyline of the series.

    Thanks!

Lady Charlotte Featherington is the debutante of the season - and her mother won't let ANYONE forget it. While her dance card is always filled and gentlemen come out of the woodwork to woo her, Lady Charlotte holds out for 'true love' like her cousin, Lavinia Ellison found. Just when she thinks she's found the man of her dreams, her mother steps in and pushes her toward the Duke of Hartington. Why marry a mere gentleman when you can snag a title? Who cares if he's older? Who cares if he appears dull? Who cares if the rumors are flying about his first wife and her death? He's wealthy, titled, interested in Charlotte, and that's enough for Charlotte's mother.

William Hartwell, Duke of Hartington, already endured one faithless wife. He has no desire to jump into another marriage with another silly socialite. If he didn't need a male heir, he wouldn't even think of getting married at all. Then, he meets Charlotte Featherington. Her beauty entrances him but it is her sympathy that truly captures his heart. Her disinterest in him, though, is a problem. Can he make her see that they have much in common? Can his quiet ways win the heart of a girl who dreams of excitement and passion?

When I first met Charlotte in 'The Elusive Miss Ellison' she seemed rather silly. The things that concerned her were almost childish, and book 2 started off with her in much the same vein. Then, I began to see glimpses of the woman peeking out past the youthful 18-year-old. I loved the way she compared each of her suitors to the I Corinthians 13 passage - love is patient, love is kind, etc. The only man who met all of the criteria put forth in those verses was the one man she didn't expect to want, the Duke. I also had a strong dislike for her social-climbing mother. While everyone else rolled their eyes and let her jabber on endlessly about things that just didn't matter, I loved that William and her husband were both able to put her in her place, so to speak.

Readers who enjoy Regency romance will love this one! I couldn't put it down once I started reading. It was a history lesson in a romance in a mystery with a heavy dose of scripture to guide the choices of the main characters. I highly recommend this series!

Carolyn Miller has once again written a book to satisfy readers who love Regency romance and who also appreciate stories filled with faith. Her first book The Elusive Miss Ellison concentrated on Lavinia and Nicholas and now, in this book, Lavinia's cousin Charlotte is given her own story; a story worth waiting for! Charlotte is eighteen and she longs for a mad, exciting love and she thinks she has found him but her father thinks otherwise. Her mother wants her to 'marry well' and she has Duke Hartwell in mind as the perfect candidate. As we watch Charlotte mature from a selfish young girl looking for love and passion we also get a glimpse of the truly good man that Duke William is. A man who has been hurt by his late wife's deception and yearning for a wife to love and treasure; a man who wants a marriage filled with loyalty and a mate who loves God as much as he does.

The Captivating Lady Charlotte has mystery, intrigue, and humor and watching the relationship develop between Charlotte and William is very satisfying to those who enjoy romance. I also enjoyed seeing Lavinia and Nicholas featured again and it is because of them that Charlotte and William are both able to witness what true love is and to also grow spiritually. The author has shown through Lavinia and Nicholas the ability to praise God even as a person strives to overcome burdens.

It is obvious that Carolyn Miller has done extensive research about this historical period and she has been able to share it in a story that both entertains and inspires. I am looking forward to her next book that will be published later this year.

I received this book from the author and Book Club Network and chose to share my honest thoughts in this review.
