The Book of Isaiah, 3 Volumes

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. / 1972 / Paperback

Product Description

Young's classic 3-volume commentary engages in a line-by-line exegesis of the Book of Isaiah, setting interpretation firmly in the context of Isaiah's archaeological, cultural, and intellectual background. Young's conclusions are theologically conservative, and though he believes Isaiah to be a unified, single-author book, he respectfully interacts with opposing views. Includes bibliographies and indexes. Volume 1 covers chapters 1-18; Volume 2 looks at chapters 19-39; Volume 3 surveys chapters 40-66.

Commentary is perhaps more narrowly Reformed than I expected

This commentary is very good for the era in which it was written, yet perhaps not as considerate of eschatologies that do not see the Church as the chief heir and implementer of the divine blessings to the world foretold by Isaiah. Although I largely agree with that point of view, I think it better that a work of scholarship be less dogmatic in asserting it. Nevertheless, I appreciate the obvious knowledge of Dr. Young regarding the Hebrew language, as well as his applications of God's Word through Isaiah to us as believers in Christ; that if his coming has produced positive changes in our lives, then we need to bring this same salvation to others, both near or far.

Another thing I like about this commentary (besides the very fair price) is the three-volume format in paperback. Having the commentary thus partitioned facilitates the study of such a major prophet, since fewer chapters are covered by the individual volumes.

I expect the product was good for some more sophisticated in the Scriptures than I am, but I didn't need such depth. I gave the volumes to my church's library.

I wish I had known this isn't a dispensationalist commentary. I wouldn't have bought it.

There's no one more qualified AND more popular than E.J. Young to argue for the unity of Isaiah in the 21st century. Great commentary, historical and contextual information, and interaction with the overall Christian Scriptures.
