Despite the familiar location and some familiar faces, The Bachelor's Unexpected Family is a standalone story but if you're a fan of the Duer family from previous books, you'll be happy to connect with them again in this one.
Carter explores the complexities of letting go in this emotional novel of love and loss and having the courage to love again. Kristina and Canyon are both living in the past -- in different ways. Kristina is rooted in the memories of her life before her husband's death while Canyon struggles to overcome the sins associated with the Collier name.
Honestly, there were times when I wanted to smack Kristina upside the head because she is so fixated on the past that she can't even see what's in her present never mind the potential of any future. And she's at risk of losing her son over irrational fears that spur her into overprotective mama bear mode. Love how Gray challenges her, goading her into facing truths she's been burying for years. And she's good at drawing him out of his reclusive tendencies. Everyone can see that these two are perfect for each other -- including their teens -- but this hero and heroine don't make it easy on anyone.
Real and raw and emotionally satisfying.

Still grieving the loss of her husband, she longs for a small town, away from the constant memories of her husband.
Canyon Collier is trying his best to turn his life around in his home town. After a troubled youth, he becomes a pilot and makes something of his life. However, he still feels shamed by his family name. Now, he is thrust into parenthood with the responsibility of his 16 year old niece, who has also lived a troubled life.
When Kristina and Canyon's paths cross, there is a definite spark, but can they let go of their pasts and see that they each deserve a second chance at life, love, and happiness?
This was my first book to read of Lisa Carter's and I truly enjoyed it! Great characters and storyline! It was very easy to become apart of this story, reading on to see what would happen.
I received a copy of this book from the author, but was not required to give a positive review. This is my honest opinion of this book.
