The Amish Midwife's Secret by Rachel Good takes us to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kyle Miller is surprised when he receives a call from Dr. Martin Hess who is the local physician in his hometown. Dr. Hess is ready to retire, and he is offering his practice to Kyle. After what happened, Kyle is not sure he can face returning home. Leah Stolzfus is a midwife in training plus she is knowledgeable about herbal remedies from working in her families' herbal shop. Kyle agrees to shadow Dr. Hess for three days, but he did not expect to butt heads to pretty Leah. Dealing with the past is overwhelming and Kyle is going to turn down Dr. Hess' offer. But when Dr. Hess has a heart attack and needs someone to cover his practice, Kyle cannot say no. Leah fills in for Esther Hess as nurse/receptionist. She thrives in her new role in the doctor's office and begins falling for handsome doctor. Leah is not willing to give up her family and faith for love until she falls in love with abandoned baby and Kyle is not willing to become Amish. Can Kyle and Leah compromise for the sake of the child?

The Amish Midwife's Secret can be read alone if you have not read The Amish Teacher's Gift. Kyle Miller is reluctant to return home because of an incident that changed his life. We learn what happened with Kyle as the story progresses. It is a sad story that is dealt with delicately. It is a wonderful opportunity for him, though, to obtain a doctor's established practice plus a home. Leah Stolzfus is Amish, takes care of her sick mother, works in the family herbal supply store, and is training to be a midwife. However, Leah cannot become certified as a midwife because the Amish do not allow it (I do not understand the concept). There is drama in the Stolzfus family courtesy of Leah's brother who jumped the fence and the father has been unable to forgive him. We see how this has affected the family and how they deal with the situation. Leah also has a secret and is afraid to share it with Kyle. I thought The Amish Midwife's Secret was well-written and engaging. It has steady pacing which makes the story easy to read and enjoy. I like the characters, the setting and the issues addressed. We see how modern medicine can be balanced with herbal medicines if people are willing to work together for the good of their patients. I appreciated that the characters developed over the course of the story. Christian elements include forgiveness of others as well as yourself (harder to accomplish), prayer, having faith, and God's will. I thought the Christian aspects were nicely incorporated into the story. Everything flowed together into one lovely story. It was interesting to learn about the different herbs and the symptoms/illnesses they can treat. The pair also visit the Clinic for Special Children that has been established (it is a real place) to research, prevent and treat the inherited diseases by Amish and Mennonite. The Amish Midwife's Secret combines romance, mystery, drama, and faith into one engaging tale.

This is a book that will appeal to those that love the Amish genre as well as those who just love a GREAT read!! The theme throughout is one that touched me deeply, a lifelong journey of forgiveness, both of self and others, as well as the power of love and faith. Both main characters, Kyle and Leah struggle to accomplish what God has instructed, but find it a difficult task indeed. It is so easy to say that one can forget the past however NOT easy to actually accomplish it! Rachel describes her characters in such a detailed realistic way that one quickly becomes engrossed in their lives. Their problems and challenges become those of the reader!! These two young people are true to life- they are not perfect! They have flaws as all of us do! Their path to a happy life is rocky at times and it seems as if they can never truly find happiness. I know that feeling, all too well!

The plot moves steadily with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader engrossed from beginning to end of the book. Thank goodness this story flows so well and is an easy read, as the reader will certainly have difficulty putting the book down before finishing it. I know that I did!

Rachel is to be commended on her accurate description of the Amish lifestyle. She has certainly done her research well! Her ability to portray the Amish lifestyle in such a believable way makes her novels rich in facts and details.

A five star book!! Don't miss it!!

This book was received from the author and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.

Magnificent--top notched Amish genre story found in The Amish Midwife's Secret, book two in A Love and Promises series by beloved Rachel J. Good. This story is filled with characters that are flawed in the Amish community and English world where they need to overcome the past to find forgiveness. Good created an intriguing, heartwarming story that is masterful, picturesque and authentic in her Amish research.

Kyle Miller returned to the Amish community to visit Dr. Hess and the offer he made for his practice. Kyle had other dreams for his medical career, but when some hidden truths are revealed and unpredicted happenings transpire maybe he will discover his way back to God. Leah Stoltzfus dream as a midwife and a family came to a halt in a heartbreaking way. However, another delivery for Kyle and her in a middle of a storm may just bring some joy and blessing. This story is filled with family, faith, forgiveness in multiple ways and so much more. I do not want to give anything away, but this book is a MUST be read one for fans of Amish genre. I look forward to reading The Amish Widow's Rescue when it's released in 2019 as the next book in the Love and Promises series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts expressed are my sincere ones.

I have never read a book by Rachel and now I am a fan.

I will say sometimes I don't care for Amish fiction because it can move kind of slow. Not the case with this book. This was a fast-paced, page turner full of unanswered questions and tension.

I had to keep reading to find out what had happened in the characters past and how that would play into their future.

I loved the romantic tension between Kyle and Leah but so much was in their way and I wondered how they would overcome it.

If you are looking for a good Amish fiction read this would be a great one to pick up.

A copy of this book was given to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.
