Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil. At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist. And so did everyone else--he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach. He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.
Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.
In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook's classic Picture Bible. What David C. Cook couldn't know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible. He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!

What was your motivation behind this project? To do a Life changing, Eternal value, relevant project the way I love to do: Comic Book format. When they called me, offering me to do it, I could not contain my excitement to revamp the Classic Picture Bible I read when I was a kid. This has probably been the most significant project of my life. I wish I was given more time to accomplish it but I had to do it in 3 years.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Get entertainment and get inspired, hopefully get touched inwardly, reconnecting with the Artist of artists: Jesus Christ , who is present not only in the New Testament but in the Old testament as well. So I hope they gain life, full, never ending life.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I know the main Character, Jewish carpenter of this story of Love and redemption. Many times, while drawing the pages I found myself in need of applying the life teaching principals within this Divine inspired script in my own private world. One of the colorists got a personal life encounter with the messiah of the story. The subject matter taps into our soul in ways that can be revolutionary for our betterment .
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? From comics, strips and graphic novels: Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, Joe Kubert's Tarzan, John Buscema's Conan , Frank Frazetta's books , Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon and many others . In the movies side: Mel Gibson's "The Passion" and Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" .
