Dr. William Backusis founder of the Center for Christian Psychological Services, and an ordained clergyman in the Lutheran church. He is also a licensed Consulting Psychologist. He has a master's degree in theology from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Backus has conducted follow-up studies of his clients, which show a 95 percent improvement rate, compared to a 67 percent success rate for other methods of therapy. The difference, Dr. Backus says, is "the truth of God as revealed in the Word."
In addition, he serves as an assistant pastor on the staff of North Heights Lutheran Church, Roseville, Minnesota, where he has founded and directed a lay-staffed free counseling clinic. He and his wife live in Minnesota.
Reviews4U5 Stars Out Of 5Very Informative!August 26, 2014Reviews4UI found this to be a very helpful book. The authors discuss Misbelief Therapy and explain how to work through misbeliefs. Many times people accept their thoughts without further challenging them. This acceptance can often make people experience feelings and react to those feelings. An example is given in the book about a man who was going through a divorce that he did not want. One day he listened to what he had been telling himself. He had thoughts about him being a failure and how nobody loved or cared about him. He soon realized that the depression that he had been experiencing was due to his thoughts instead of his divorce. He learned to reject those thoughts and focus on the truth. Although not an easy process, he found that he could lead a fulfilling life. This book contains many other examples of how lives can be changed when the lies are rejected and the truth is lived out.
I recommend this book as I found it to be very useful. Life can be so busy that very few people take the time to really think about what they are thinking about. Reading this book provides some understanding as to why people may be experiencing different emotions and how to combat negative emotions. The following are the ten misbeliefs that are discussed: Self-Talk, Depression, Anger, Anxiety, Lack of Self-Control, Self-Hate, Fear of Change, Never Taking a Chance, Our Relationship with Others and Being Indispensable. The authors provide tools on how to combat negative thoughts and replace them with the truth. For additional help, a study guide is provided at the back of the book for individual or group use.

I took extra time reading this one using the Study Guide that is included in the back of the book. Let me just say how great it is when Study guides are included, because it really helps to go through the material thoroughly as well as causing one to respond to questions that often you wouldn't even think of on your own.
This is a book that I would highly recommend reading, it is full of ways that we tell ourselves misbelief and the lies we speak to ourself in our self talk. This book is really a tool box full of tools for you to use if you are serious about getting to the bottom of the why's in your life. I found that with each chapter, more and more issues were being resolved, that is why i took my time, I didn't want to just read this book, I wanted to apply it! I would recommend that is how this book is used, it would make a great ladies Bible Study book for small groups to go through but it is also ideal for individual study as well. I can't say enough good about this, it is so fantastic, run to the store and buy this book, don't let it just sit on your shelf though delve into the richness of it and use it to really as i said earlier be a tool to defeat the enemy in your life.
This is one of those books that would need to be read and re-read with each time you read it, you get something new out of it. The Authors did a great job with the organization of the book and the topics such as self hate, depression, anxiety, relationships with others and self talk as well as many more are all areas that we could struggle in, , but the exposure of the lies is huge and assists in the combat of those lies we believe so we are no longer prisoners but are able to become free of that negativity and self destructive behaviour we often exhibit when we believe lies about ourselves or others we are in relationship with. Again I highly recommend this book and say Run to the store to get this, it is worth every penny!!!!!
