We had so much stress for so long over MATH. The crying, the chest pain, the frustration was terrible. Finally we took a long break from math and started again but this time we tried something different...Teaching Textbooks. This changed everything. My daughter has done so much better; the change is remarkable. Of course, its less time for me because the program grades everything, etc but the best part is that she works independently (which she should be doing at this age) and she UNDERSTANDS what she is doing. I saw a review once that said they did not like TT because they felt like the teacher did not explain why problems were done in a specific way. I do not agree. I took algebra up through college level and one thing you cannot stress over is "why". Algebra is a series of steps. Just memorize and follow the steps. You cannot question "why?" with Algebra; Its Algebra! I urge you to try it. Yes, its costly, and I even think its overpriced but I buy it because it works. We do not use the textbook itself much but its good to have and I do agree it could be done better. But since its not really used all that much, its not a huge factor. We use mainly the CD-ROMS. Try it! We will be using it for Algebra I, II, and Geometry too.
I can not rave enough about this curriculum. it is so simple and easy to use. prior to this year my son was in public then private school and he was struggling in math. this year with this curriculum he is getting it. it is so exciting for me as a parent to see how much he is flourishing. math still is not his favorite subject but he is understanding what he is learning. i would highly recommend this curriculum to any homeschool parent and even private and public schools.
My 13 year old son used TT Pre Algebra this year. He has Asperger Syndrome which is a high functioning form of Austism. He hated Math forever but with this curriculum he has learned to love it. He hates repetition when he already "gets it" so the format of TT is wonderful. It has been a life saver for us. We will continue use of TT products through high school. The nice part is that my daughter coming up a few grades behind can use it without me buying anything new!
We completed level 7 and are about half-way through Pre-Algebra, and after trying many other math curricula, this one has been a pretty good fit for us. I like the way the lessons are presented bit by bit and so the student isn't overwhelmed with new information.
The only real "issues" I have with it, is the quality of the books isn't that great, and I wish there were supplemental exercises that could be done if the student needed it.
The automated grading is a great feature; saves lots of time and the student can have immediate results! This is a very homeschool mom user friendly program!
Would really recommend Teaching Textbooks if you have a learner that needs to take things at a slower pace, or is struggling in math. (I have yet to find the "perfect" math curriculum, but this one is pretty close!)
