I originally wanted to do Teaching Textbooks, but was turned away because of it's price and we attempted Life of Fred, Saxon Math, and Moby Max. None of these programs was the right fit for my son so I sucked it up and bought Teaching Textbooks. I should have bought this from the beginning. I saw an immediate turn around with my son! He loves this math program and I won't ever use anything else again!
After 4 years of trying, drilling, begging, pleading, being creative, reinforcing, and math drills, my 10 year old daughter still struggled in math to the point of daily tears and meltdowns. Teaching Textbooks changed EVERYTHING! No, she still doesn't love math but now she willingly does her work independently, and then proudly shows me her scores. Her comprehension is so much stronger now. My only regret was being too "cheap" to take everyone's advice and try this sooner. It certainly would have saved us a great many tears. Worth every dime!!!
...but not necessarily academically advanced. I started my third grader in level four. Just take the placement test if you are unsure. Also, I wouldn't be too afraid of skipping a level because the child always has the option of having wrong problems explained so they can learn from their mistakes, which is a great way to learn. And it is not the end of the world if they are not advanced in Math, just move at your child's pace.
I felt guilty when I first bought this thinking I was not giving the Excellent Education I thought (haha) I would be capable of as a homeschool teacher. But I have multiple grades to teach and I think this is far better than when I did not have time to go over Math with all the kids. They can listen to the lectures and go over every problem as many times as they need, and they can feel successful (!) and independent (!). I simply supplement (because I want to) with Critical Thinking Company Math software to help encourage problem solving, etc.
I pulled my son from ps in 3rd grade because he was struggling with the math he was bringing home (common core) We would sit at the table for 3 hours and he would cry and get so upset... That year we taught him thru a Cyber school... Same thing, but better... I was able to explain it right away instead of having to wait till he was doing homework, but that following year the Cyber school turn over to Common core.. So I decided to teach him traditionally... So I ordered this... He is Excelling! He is finally "getting it" and maintaining an A average! I highly recommend Teaching Textbooks! Wish they made K-2nd for my younger two!
I love Teaching Textbooks! My child was struggling in Public School because of Common Core. This math helped him gain the understanding and confidence that he needed. We look forward to continuing Teaching Textbooks in the future!
