matt5 Stars Out Of 5Great ResourceDecember 4, 2016mattQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Found this very useful, especially in tandem with the books for children. We decided our son wasn't quite ready for as much detail as the kids book for his age group, so we used the one for one age group below.
Sarah Head2 Stars Out Of 5September 1, 2009Sarah HeadI have to be honest and unfortunately I was a little disappointed in the book. I felt that a lot of the book was geared towards 'why' we should teach our children healthy sexuality instead of 'how' to do that. For me personally, I bought the book knowing all the statistics out there and I knew the topics I needed to cover with my kids but I am uncertain how to approach it. And I feel that book answered 'how to approach it' in a very broad sense. I realize that every family and child is different but I guess I expected it to give some more details and ideas on how to have those hard conversations and when to have them. If you are looking for answers to what is 'age appropriate' information, and how to work those hard conversations into every day life, this book is not going to answer those questions for you. It does give you a list of topics that need to be discussed. But for me, a lot of it was not new information. To be fair it does list a handful of examples of what Jim did with his daughters (ie taking them out for frozen yogurt to discuss movies etc). It also gives many examples kids who didn't follow God's plan and got sucked into the 'world'. Several times I even felt like they were trying to 'sell' me on buying 'The Purity Code' (another one of Jim Burn's Books). I kept thinking, when are we going to get to the meat of 'how to teach...'? When I got done reading Teaching your Children Healthy Sexuality, I felt just as ill equipped as I did when I started reading the book. I know that I need to teach my kids God's best for their sexuality, but I needed hard core examples and details on how to do that. The basic of the book is talk to you kids over and over again in a casual way about Godly sexuality and have an open relationship with them by dialoging and not lecturing. This book just didn't answer the questions I had.
