Mr. Boyer writes about a variety of topics that relate to American youth and challenges us as young people to make a powerful difference in America.
Amy BAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Every young person MUST read this!June 6, 2012Amy BAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Oh. my. goodness. This is one of the most amazing books that I have ever read in my life. (And I've read a lot of books!)
Rick Boyer is sending a message out to my generation. Be homeschooled or not, Mr. Boyer has a challenge for us: Take back the land.
Through his book Mr. Boyer shows us the problems going on in our country- he reveals how they are contrary to not only the Word of God but also to the way that our forefathers originally intended this country to be.
But first (this was my favorite part) he exhorts us to "grow up". "Don't waste your youth" is the title of the chapter in which Mr. Boyer basically tells us that he is not going to talk down to us, we are adults and he is going to treat us as such. No childish behavior or short attention spans allowed- how can you impact the world if you are still sucking on your thumb? The world glorifies youth. It encourages us to "never grow up". I want to encourage you- "Grow up!" Be responsible, show the world that you aren't an "Angry Birds" champion (what's that anyway?)- you are an adult that holds responsibility and is careful with his/her time. You would rather change the world for the better then be satisfied with mediocrity.
Mr. Boyer goes on to reveal to us that we are the "Joshua Generation". Those before us (the "Moses Generation") led us out of Egypt- out of slavery- we were given the rights to be homeschooled. These rights were bought with an incredible price- Mr. Boyer attests to this with some of his own history. But now, as my generation is entering the Promised Land, there are foes that have risen up and taken over. God has called us, as He called the Israelites, to wipe them out- one at a time.
On to more practical points, Mr. Boyer in the remaining chapters goes into specific detail on the problems in different areas of our nation, Education, Media, Family, Church, and more. At the closing of each chapter he does not leave us hanging our heads ("woe is me!")- he shows us a practical way that we can be the solution in our land and bring about positive change.
I was incredibly encouraged by this book! It was well-written, though sometimes a lot to take in therefore a challenge to read- but it was exactly the wake-up call that I believe my generation needs. I was so blessed to be able to read about the specific problems, how they occurred, and how they can be solved. I wasn't even finished with it yet and I was recommending it to everyone!
Thank you, Mr. Boyer, for such an encouragement to my generation! I was so blessed by your book- and I pray that others in my generation will feel the same that we might rise up as one...
WriterRani4 Stars Out Of 5A Good Read for HomeschoolersMay 1, 2012WriterRaniQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4When I read this book, I wasn't sure what to think. Rick Boyer talks about this generation being leaders, but it seems as if he doesn't want women leaders outside of the family or church, which I do understand based on Proverbs 31. The rest of the book doesn't seem to be geared towards teen girls if they are not to be leaders outside of the house.
I did like learning that public schools were started in Germany. I also agree with Rick Boyer about age segregation in the church. Teens do need to be in the sanctuary with their parents and not talking with their friends or texting them.
I would recommend this book for boys in high school, especially ones who have been homeschooled.
Disclosure- I received Take Back the Land by Rick Boyer for free from Master Books. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I'm disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.
The Happy Homeschool MomAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Book!March 26, 2012The Happy Homeschool MomAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5" This is a book for young people. It was written because I believe you people are important and that they have a huge part in God's plan for the future of America and the Church. In fact, you are the future. And a big part of the present, too."
In Take Back The Land, Rock Boyer, homeschooling father of 14 is speaking to today's young people and encouraging them, the Joshua generation (the second generation of homeschoolers whose parents the Moses generation fought for homeschooling freedoms in the 1980's) to stand up, take notice, and take back our land for Christ. Throughout the book he speaks very realistically without dumbing teens down and unapoligetically about the problems America is facing today and what our teens can do it about it. Not tomorrow, or when they are "adults", but what they can start doing today to take back our "promised land." In his very down to earth conversational tone, Rick talks about areas such as: education, the media, the arts, the family, the church, and the courts. He shows how our founding fathers intended for things to be and how far astray our nation has come. He gives very realistic ways our young people today can step into the arena and begin the fight to take back our land. I loved how the book ended, "We really don't need another order. Our Commander has already said, "Go ye into all the world." Your response is up to you. The Moses generation is watching you, Joshua. Take back the land."
I wanted to add that although it is written for teens (in my opinion older teens), I think homeschooling parents can read and greatly benefit from the book also. Do you ever waver in your conviction to homeschool? Read the book especially the section on education so you can be reminded how and why government run schools came about and what they really teach children. " Sit still and be quiet. Don't question why we do it this way, just do it. Give us the answer we want or we'll punish you. Know your place: mainstream, gifted, or LD. We will tell you what you're worth. We will tell you what to read. We will tell you what to think. We will drug you if you get out of hand. We will tell you , by golly, when to go to the bathroom. You're not here to learn to run you're own life."
I would highly recommend Take Back the Land for the older teen and homeschooling parents, those who may be thinking about homeschooling, or even if you didn't homeschool and are interested in what you can do to make a difference in our nation today and in future generations.
I received a complimentary copy of Take Back the Land from New Leaf Publishing Group for the purpose of writing a fair and honest review. I received no other compensation.
FayeAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A must read for today's teens!February 17, 2012FayeAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Take Back the Land is a must read for Christians, though it is directed to homeschooled youth, I believe that it would be beneficial to parents and non-homeschooled teens as well. Though alot of this stuff was review for me, I found that this book was very reaffirming and that I enjoyed how this book was like a warm conversation with a mentor. Also, this book is a great read, and is especially timely with the 2012 Presidential Election taking place later this year.
In my opinion, this book reminds me slightly of Do Hard Things, but much better! Take Back the Land is honest and opinionated and doesn't apologize for it which was a welcome change from the typical teen non-fiction reads that try to please everyone and don't dig deep enough. Reading this book was like a honest conversation with Mr. Boyer, with a few chuckles on the side. Though there were some things I disagreed with, I agreed with the main point and the call to be citizens who make a difference. I'm proud to say that by this November, I will be eighteen and able to vote for the first time!
Take Back the Land covers the changes in the last few decades that have taken place in Education, the Media, the Church, the Family, the Government, the Courts, and the Arts. All of which we should be very concerned about! If you aren't already, this book will put a fire under your seat to get involved in the election of politicians, and the way our country is running these days, to make a difference!
Though I admit that this book wasn't exactly world changing for me--I'm a teenager who thinks that watching this year's political caucuses, primaries, and elections is fun, because you can find a gazillion logical fallacies just listening to what most of those people say--I do think it re-affirmed my beliefs and was very encouraging. And I would totally pass this book on to my younger brother, I've been begging my mother to make this book required reading for him, I think it will be just the thing to fire him up :)
I did say that there were a few things I disagreed with, but those were very minor things and are just my personal opinion and not worth mentioning, the way some things were said, some things that though they were true for the most part were generalized more than I thought they should have been, etc. But overall this is such a great book!
Final Rating: 5 out of 5
I received this book from the publisher in return for an honest review, which I have done my best to present here. Thanks :)
