KateAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Modern Twist on You Got MailJanuary 26, 2022KateAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do you love You've Got Mail? How about Shop Around the Corner? Or The Good Ol' Summer Time? Well, if you like any or all of these, or if you have read Dear Mr. Knightly by Katherine Reay, another offering into this genre...I have the book for you! Tacos For Two. This is such a fun and modern take on this tale of competing business people, who get connected and don't know it. I've watched all of these movies and have loved them all...especially You've Got Mail. I could curl up and watch it all the time.
I was interested to see how Betsy would be able to play it out with the characters not knowing each other with the world wide web at their fingertips, but it was done brilliantly! I would not survive on the dating site that was presented in this book. I would take any detail and ferret the information out, but that is what I do and the fact Rory was cool with taking it slow and not knowing made her all the more interesting.
Rory is such a loving character. She cares for her cousin, and the people she works with. She wants to keep her Aunt's food truck alive....even though she doesn't cook, which I absolutely loved. She comes off as a girl who could burn water, but keeping her aunts legacy alive is greater than her inept cooking ability.
Jude, goodness, what a guy. He is one who has had to deal with a lot bullying and forced competition in his family. He is the black sheep of his family, but that isn't a bad thing. He deal with a dad who is overbearing and hold the family money over his head. A brother that is always wanting to prove that he is better then Jude. But he had a caring nanny growing up that instilled into him a love of cooking.
The personalities between Rory and Jude are very similar. They are both ones just trying to find a path against the odds. Reading their story was fun and sweet. But of course there are some very emotional stakes and watching them play out, you are hoping it all works out, because you can't not like these two.
If you're looking for a book that is hard to keep down, try this one!
Thank you to the publisher, I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Rita5 Stars Out Of 5Tacos For TwoJanuary 17, 2022RitaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Having never read a Christian Romance book I wasn't sure what to expect. My daughter gave me, Tacos for Two as a Christmas gift. I don't like it. I LOVE IT. Super easy to read and keeps my attention. I have never had a book make so hungry. I had tacos 3 times last week. If you are looking for a fun book this, is it.
CozyWriter'sDen5 Stars Out Of 5FunJanuary 14, 2022CozyWriter'sDenQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I wanted to read this book simply because of the title: Tacos for Two. It's awesome! And the cover. I love the cover. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover (or title) but sometimes when you are reaching for a brand-new author a catchy title and a cute cover is enough for you to take the plunge. The combination certainly sold me on starting this novel.
It turns out this is actually Betsy St Amant's second novel - but it was my first time reading anything by her. Her work did not read like a new author. Her writing was confident, engaging, and her dialoge flowed. She writes like someone who has been doing this for years. Her characters are quirky, flawed (and not in a fake 'I'm trying to flaw my otherwise perfect character kind-of-way'), and likeable. I loved the concept of this book largely due to the fact that I am a huge cooking show fan and this book played out a lot like that.
I would certainly recommend Tacos for Two for anyone looking for a fun and creative afternoon read. I really enjoyed it. Thank-you to Graf Martin Communications and to Baker Publishing House for a copy of this book.
KavRCanadaGender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A captivating rom/com that's sure to please readers who are fans (or not) of You've Got MailNovember 29, 2021KavRCanadaGender: femaleSo...I was both excited and anxious over this new release. Excited because...Betsy St. Amant and that cute cover!!!! Anxious because I'd been hearing all the buzz about the You've Got Mail influences and I am so not a fan of that movie. Yes, I realize I'm likely a party of one but I can't get behind a romance between a couple already in committed relationships with other people and, more importantly, the bookstore dies. 'Nuf side. :-)
Rest assured this novel contains neither emotional cheating or the demise of a bookstore -- phew!!!! It does, however, contain humour and drama and quirky characters I loved and a few not-so-quirky that I loved to hate.
The dialogue keeps the story moving, whether it's in the form of pithy text messages or heated arguments or soul-baring candour. Impeccably paced and just when I thought the plot was going in one direction, it veered off in another. So, classic rom/com elements but enough surprising twists to keep a reader on her toes.
I felt both protagonists' struggles, though I have to admit to being a Jude fan way before I became a Rory fan. She was so quick to leap to wrong conclusions, and even quicker to snap out in anger. She's all prickly and fiery and...confused. I became more drawn to her as bits of her back story were revealed and I began to understand the reasons behind her distrust of Jude.
He has his own history to overcome as well, and a truly deplorable family, but somehow, Jude managed to be more optimistic and not allow his past experiences to encroach on the new life he's making for himself, especially when it comes to his interactions with Rory. Loved the way the whole identity mix-up plays out and brings a lovely push-pull between comedy and angst to the already emotionally layered story.
The only thing missing was a solid faith thread -- and this surprised me because it is published by Revell which is a Christian Publishing house. Forgiveness , loving your enemies and the importance of family relationships are a major focus of the conflict, just not fleshed out in the inspirational way I was expecting.
All in all a captivating rom/com that's sure to please readers who are fans (or not!) of You've Got Mail.
