Border Patrol Agent Danika Morales has sworn to protect the southern borders of our nation, but that oath has cost her. Two years ago, her husband, Toby, was killed trying to help the very immigrants Danika was responsible for sending back to Mexico. His murder was never solved. But now, a recent string of attacks and arrests leads her to believe that someone in McAllen is profiting from sneaking undocumented immigrants into the country . . . and it may somehow be tied to Tobys death.
Mills depicts the high-stress jobs of Border Patrol agents and emergency room surgeons well, providing action and intensity from the beginning of the book. She handles the topic of illegal immigration with depth, insight, and compassion. Short, quick-paced chapters invite the reader to keep going. A quote introduces each chapter, many of which highlight the importance of telling the truth. John 8:32 starts one chapter with the reminder that You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (NIV). Other themes include forgiveness over anger, compassion mixed with justice, and self-sacrificing love.
At the opening of the novel, Danika does not fully trust God because of her husbands murder two years before. Still, she does her job well, mixing courageous action and compassion in pursuing safety at the border. When her life is threatened, she must choose to return to God and to continue searching for the truth. Those close to Danika feel pressure as well, including her brother-in-law and his family, her new love interest, and other close friends. The histories between the characters add depth to the relationships within the novel. However, some characters feel underdeveloped and their motives are not completely fleshed out. One well-developed relationship involves a subplot between Danika and her daughters nanny, who hides a secret despite feeling like a member of Danikas family.
This is a fast-paced novel of relationships under stress. It is a good story for anyone who likes a romance-suspense plot, particularly Christian women. The story includes some tense scenes, but is still suitable for teenagers. For those who like themes, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter add dimension to what is already an interesting story, while those who skip over them will still enjoy all of the romance and action. Susan Kinney5 Stars Out Of 5Sworn to ProtectAugust 6, 2015Susan KinneyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This fiction/romance/suspense captured my attention from the first page and was quite difficult to put down. DiAnn weaves the character's lives together with strong threads of tension and secrets. Using intrigue and believable characters, DiAnn provided a wonderful reading experience. I wrote a lot more about her book and interviewed the author on my blog. She writes with quality, strength, and excellence. "Sworn to Protect"is a definite re-read and I highly recommend her as an author. Her research took her on a three day ride-along with Boarder Patrol agents. Some of the experiences she shares are from real life experiences. She handles a volitale topic with utmost respect and I applaud her for her skill.

The only part of her life that is missing finding her husbands killer. She is used to working as a team, but when someone makes her a target, she finds it hard to know whom to trust.
Dr. Alex Price believes in healing people who need it and it doesnt make any difference if they are a citizen of US or not. When he meets Agent Morales he is drawn to her, but he soon finds that they may be to different to make any kind of a relationship work.
There are several items about this book that I found fascinating. The fact that the book is centered around the US border control organization and some unclassified ways that the agency works was enthralling. I have never read a fiction book with this premise. Also the fact that Danika and Alex each were on a different side of the illegal alien issue that is so prevalent in our news today. I loved the way the author brought out both side of this issue and the fact that sometime things arent as black and white as we try to make them out to be.
This was a superb book that will keep readers on the edge of their seat from start to finish.
LarikSan Antonio, TXAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Captivating!!June 1, 2013LarikSan Antonio, TXAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Amazing captivating writing!!! Had me so deep in the story that I just couldnt wait till morning to finish it.
All characters were developed well. Danika was a perfection of strength and honesty!! I felt really bad about Sandra. Alex a picture of compassion and patience kept me wishing for more parts with him. I absolutelly loved his mom and I hope in the future I will treat my son same way, instead of rallying for him like a mother hen. Amazing woman!!
Jacob is probably the character I felt for the most. I have gone through the path of grief/depression (my poor family had lots of patiance to pull me through) and his reaction and behavior were accurate. But sometimes it takes to loose all we hold dear to realize we need to get a grip on ourselves.
I loved the illigal immigrants and border patrol description. It is hard to comprehand what those poor people go through to get here for a brighter future. And the dangers and sacrifice of border patrol, I never realized was of this magnum.
I want to thank SusannGary Fryman for sharing a this amazing book with me! Im sorry for keeping it on my nightstand for so long, if I only knew the treasure in it, I would have read it the moment I got it.. :)

Through her characters, Ms. Mills presents a well-researched and balanced view of the issue of illegal immigration with compassion, honesty and integrity for both sides through the characters and setting of her story. The people in this book are fully developed, well-crafted and engaging. You care about them right from the beginning. You are pulled into their stories, their dreams, their struggles. The antagonists are complete people, not stereotypes. Their true natures are not revealed until the end.The suspense, romantic and the Christian elements are very believable. This book is a definite page turner as you follow Agent Morales on duty protecting our borders, at home dealing with widowhood and a handicapped child, tentatively exploring the possibility of a romantic relationship all while her career and life are threatened by forces and people out to kill her.I highly recommend this book.
