Publisher's Description

"Sweetbriar Cottage is a story to fall in love with. True-to-life characters, high stakes, and powerful chemistry blend to tell an emotional story of reconciliation."

—Brenda Novak, New York Times bestselling author

When Noah and Josephine discover their divorce was never actually finalized, their lives are turned upside down.

Following his divorce, Noah gave up his dream job and settled at a remote horse ranch in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Georgia, putting much-needed distance between himself and the former love of his life. But then Noah gets a letter from the IRS claiming he and Josephine are still married. When he confronts Josephine, they discover that she missed the final step in filing the paperwork and they are, in fact, still married.

Josephine is no happier about the news than Noah. Maybe the failed marriage—and botched divorce—was her fault, but her heart was shattered right alongside his, more than he would ever believe. The sooner they put this marriage behind them, the better for both of their sakes.

But when Josephine delivers the final paperwork to his ranch, the two become stranded in his cottage during the worst spring snowstorm in a decade. Being trapped with Josephine is a test of Noah’s endurance. He wrestles with resentment and an unmistakable pull to his wife—still beautiful, still brave, and still more intriguing than any woman he’s ever known.

As they find themselves confronted with each other and their shared past, old wounds surface and tempers flare. But when they are forced out into the storm, they must rely on each other in a way they never have before. Josephine finally opens up about her tragic past, and Noah realizes she’s never been loved unconditionally by anyone—including him. Will Noah accept the challenge to pursue Josephine’s heart? And can she finally find the courage to trust Noah?

"Sweetbriar Cottage is a wonderful story, full of emotional tension and evocative prose."

—Francine Rivers, New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love

A wonderful love story. Had plenty of passion but so much more of what real love is about. The kind of love that can heal the deepest hurts. I couldn't put it down - even read two hours strait in an uncomfortable chair cause just had to keep reading.

5 Tissue Box Alert! This is a powerful love story that's real and raw and emotionally gut-wrenching. My tummy is still doing flip-flops and my heart feels bruised. What a testimony of unconditional love -- both the Grace that was extended to us on the cross and the grace we offer to one another. Not an easy read by any means but so worth the emotional bludgeoning. The kind of story that transforms the reader. Convicts anew.

Artfully told through present day and flashbacks, Hunter painstakingly lays out a story of despair that turns into triumph. A shattered marriage. Two broken people. I was on tenterhooks the entire read. Often left reeling after one disclosure or another. And there are so many unexpected twists in the plot! A romance so deeply intimate that I felt an intruder at times.

This is so much more than a story about two people who discover they aren't actually divorced. That premise is captivating enough for a romance novel. But it's where Hunter takes us that makes this an exceptional read. There's so much more I want to say but I don't want to reveal plot details. Sweetbriar Cottage is definitely a fantastic candidate for a book club selection. In fact, I might just create a club so I can book talk to my heart's content! Definitely on my top ten reads of 2017 (if I was into making up top ten lists.)

At it's heart this is the story of a very damaged, self-sabotaging woman and a reactionary man who saw what he wanted to see and wouldn't really listen to what he didn't want to hear. It is the story of how, after learning that their divorce was not finalized, they finally begin to communicate openly and really find each other, through difficult and then harrowing circumstances. And being an Inspirational story, it is also the story of how their marriage moves toward becoming "equally yoked."

Sweetbriar Cottage is perfectly suited for a Fall or Winter read, as the two main characters become trapped in the eponymous cottage and later are forced to trek through snow. Josephine and Noah's relationship is a complicated one, and the story moves back and forth through time, slowly revealing how they met and their current circumstances evolved.

Well paced and well written, though a bit eye-rolling when the narration repeatedly mentions Noah's desire for Josephine as his "greedy, fleshly part." Overall, though, a worthwhile read with a sweetly melancholy air.

If you enjoy a story of reconciliation, a romance that delves deeper on an emotional level, I highly recommend Sweetbriar Cottage.

Denise Hunter writes such real and captivating books. This one holds true to that.

This book was heartbreaking in parts that made it difficult to read. But I had to understand what happened. What drove these two people apart and how could they reconcile all that went wrong.

Honestly, both the main characters had characteristics that bothered me at first. They weren't overly lovable, a bit rough around the edges but I still liked them.

Overall, a wonderful read that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next and drew me to the characters and their flaws.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

    Sweetbriar Cottage by Denise Hunter

This book was sent to me by The Fiction Guild in exchange for my honest review. No financial compensation was received, and opinions expressed are my own.

Ill start by sharing this honest tidbit: I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. The cover, while beautiful, did not draw me in and did not match the plot, and the plot summary on the back initially caused me to think that the story would be convoluted and LifetimeTV-movie-ish. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the characters were endearing and relatable, the story had more twists and turns than I expected and the challenges the characters dealt with, particularly Josephine, are ones not often touched on in Christian fiction. I was glad to have read it. My one criticism - the cover and the plot really dont match at all and it created a disconnect in my mind, as a very visual person. I would have preferred that the cover depict the winter storm during which the entire novel takes place, rather than an idyllic summer scene that seems unrelated to the story within. I would recommend this book, though, to people who enjoy quality Christian fiction that isnt too heavy, but does touch on some topics that are more sensitive than a lot of other popular CF novels.
