Product Description

Jacey met the man of her dreams a year ago, and she hasn't seen him since. Finally relocating him as the pastor at her best friend's wedding was the last thing she expected. A year ago, Jacey was trapped on a rooftop during a flood with perfect strangers, including a family and a man named Colin. After two days there together, she had no doubt that Colin was the man of her dreams. When they were finally rescued, he tucked his number into her pocket, but an accident with the rescue boat left her hospitalized with amnesia and PTSD.

Publisher's Description

"There’s no time," Colin said. "You have to go. Find me, call me . . ."

Jacey and Colin shared the three most intense days of their lives together, waiting for help as Mississippi floodwaters surrounded them. Jacey knew Colin was the love of her life—until her rescue boat went under water, along with Colin’s last name and pieces of Jacey’s memory.

The last thing she remembered was being submerged in water. Again.

As Jacey walks down the aisle as the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding a year later, the last person she expects to see is Colin. The biggest surprise, though, is that the man of her dreams is not wearing jeans and flip-flops as he did when he held her through those long nights of the flood. He’s the preacher.

As Jacey’s memories come flooding back, it’s almost more than she can take. The fate of the young family trapped with them haunts her. The unwavering honesty—and support—of her best friend Georgia forces her to take a fresh look at herself. She’s spent her life afraid of love. But this flood is opening Jacey’s heart in the most unexpected ways.

Editorial Reviews

'McHale has a way of creating characters who are believably flawed and human. Her wit and hilarity are perfect matches for the heartfelt romance in this winsome book.'
'The writing is so beautifully done, the prose so delicately chosen, that the book is a treat to savor.'

I was interested in reading The Sweet Smell of Magnolias & Memories the moment I read the book description. I was a little concerned because I thought it couldn't possibly be as good as it sounded. Let me state this very clearly - YES it is that good!! In fact, it's better than I even dreamed it could be when I started reading it!! It's a "you'll want to read it in one sitting" kind of good!! It's complex in storylines, relationships & personalities. It's tender in dealing with broken hearts, lives, families & marriages. It's haunting in the way it reminds you of how much suffering some people have gone through before, during & after natural disasters. It's redemptive in showing the depth that love and grace play in restoring all manner of brokenness to a renewal, a renovation & a complete change for the better. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and NetGalley. This opinion is strictly my own and without influence. I have also bought my own copy of this book for my personal library.

The Sweet Smell of Magnolias and Memories is an original story. Jacey meets Colin - likes him - has three deeply intense days but then something happens - rains - too much of it and she capsized - she was rescued again but gone was her memory of Colin and pieces of her life. A time later she sees him at a friends wedding and so it goes - I wont ruin the story for you and tell you all about it - but I will tell you this ... it is suppose to be a Christian book and I wouldn't grade this as one - morals and values are a little questionable, some bad language - in scripture is says "let no course language come out of your mouth," - there is tawdry jokes, female anatomy described in detail, and even talk of people who are not married sleeping together. It is a shame because without all that the book would be wonderful - I would have loved and recommended it but because of it I would not recommend it as a Christian book. I received a complimentary copy of this book; all the opinions in this review are my own.

This is a book that is set in Mississippi and has southern charm throughout. The peril of the flood is exciting to read and the aftermath and effect it has on the relationship of Jaecy and Colin is heartening to read. I liked every aspect of this book, from the plot to the setting to the characters. I read this book through the Fiction Guild Team Challenge program.
