Sophie owns a chocolate shop where she sells Misfortune Cookies-dipped in bitter chocolate they contain messages she handwrites each day such as "Your car seems fine now, but just wait...it will eventually be a source of frustration and unexpected delay." What starts as a gimmick, turns into a surprise hit with customers. But when her ex-fiancée moves back to their small Washington town, he is surprised at how bitter and unhappy Sophie has become. He proposes a bet--she must place an ad in the paper that simply states "Wanted: Happiness." If at least 100 people respond, proving happiness isn't a myth, she agrees to a date with him. If not, he'll leave her alone forever. Sophie is convinced she'll win, but fate has other ideas when a reporter at the paper is intrigued by the ad as a story and posts it in newspapers across the country.
Milne (The Nine Lessons) slightly dials down his trademark oversentimentality in this serviceable novel of uplift. Chocolatier Sophie Jones carries around much guilt about her parents' accidental death when she was nine, so when her fiancé, Garrett Black, dumps her, she gets to feeling very, very sad. But in a lemons/lemonade moment, she channels her disappointment into a signature cookie: the Misfortune Cookie, which becomes a hit with her customers. She's eventually somewhat content, but then Garrett begs her to take him back, and she presents him with a challenge: prove that true happiness exists. The challenge, while silly, predictably leads them down a path they never expected. While this packs all the warm fuzzies Milne's readers would expect, a flood of too-serendipitous developments strain credibility, even for a cute, disposable confection. For readers willing to do some serious suspending of disbelief, there'll be some smiles. (June) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

AJH2 Stars Out Of 5Story Good, Words BadFebruary 11, 2014AJHQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1I was looking forward to this book possibly being a book club book, but I pre-read it and I was very glad I did. The storyline was great and it was well written, which is why I was so sad that more than once they used a bad word, more than once. It was not necessary to the story, it did help to create a mood or feeling. It was poorly done. I had actually ordered extra books thinking this was an absolute book club book and I returned the others. If you're going to have a christian book, please DON'T use ANY form of curse words, there's no need, we get enough of that trash out in the world. So I cannot recommend this book :(
Cookie703Marksville,LAAge: Under 18Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Surprisingly...sweetJanuary 29, 2012Cookie703Marksville,LAAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5All my fave authors are women. Well, until I read this book, it was true. But, within the first two pages, this book captured my heart. Sophie is negative. Not "you probably will lose negative" but "I bring my umbrella with me everywhere because it just might rain". And you know misery just LOVES company. So Sophie has these "misfortune" cookies. Instead of telling you good things her cookies say stuff like "have patience. Rainy days will return" and "there are a lot of fishes in the sea. Too bad you are in a pond full of piranhas". Yeah. You get my point. So what happens to this female Scrooge when her old lover returns? Yes, the same lover who helped make Sophie believe that happiness doesn't exist. Of course she rejects even the thought of going on a date with him. But he won't be deterred. Since she's tired of his begging she comes up with a plan. If he places an add in the paper that reads "Happiness Wanted: Mail me your ideas" and gets 100 responses of things that really count she will agree to ONE date. Since he won't be deterred, he agrees. And with that the search for TRUE happiness begins. But will they find it? Maybe. And just maybe along the way they might find love...and secrets to something just as great.
You'll find a sweet read.
