Brianna5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful Honesty and SupportAugust 24, 2020BriannaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In Surviving Sorrow, Kim Erickson writes with a raw yet caring honesty that captures the intense emotions of grieving the loss of a child. Erickson explains how she came from a place of not knowing God, to believing and relying on God after the death of her son. Throughout Surviving Sorrow, she emphasizes the faithfulness of God throughout and in spite of the questions, anger, fears, and frustrations of grief. She writes candidly and invites readers to consider their own questions, hurt, and fears.
Erickson incorporates many personal examples of how she and her husband grieve the loss of their son. Some readers might identify with her preferences in grieving while other readers might feel uncomfortable, or even offended, by her choices. However, this highlights the varied responses to grief and how each person experiences different triggers and have different needs while grieving.
Of note, while Surviving Sorrow primarily focuses on grief following the loss of a child, Erickson notes that parents grieving the loss of a baby through pregnancy loss or stillbirth, experience many similar or same emotions.
Finally, although not related to the content of the text, the book is designed attractively: the design and soft texture of the cover are beautiful.
