Editorial Reviews

Tyndall writes with such vivid detail readers will feel a part of the action and romance as they experience a historical event they won't soon forget. The message that God uses the unlikeliest people to carry out His plans will resonate.

Similar to the first book in the series, Surrender the Night had me completely engrossed. Mary Lu Tyndall does a wonderful job developing the characters in the story, especially in light of the conflict that they face in being ‘enemies’ with each other.  The story takes place during the War of 1812.

At first I wasn’t sure how Surrender the Night would tie in with the other book in the Surrender to Destiny series, Surrender the Heart.  Eventually, it all begins to tie together and I was happy to get a little update on many of the characters from the first book in the series as well.

A description-heavy story that authentically takes you back to the second war of independence. Characters are drawn with depth and sensitivity. A story of forgiveness, trust, hope and love.

Surrender the Night touched on subjects from insecurity, uncertainty, lost innocence, forgiveness, bravery and love while set in an interesting time in US history, the war of 1812.

One of the themes in the book that touched me was that God loves you through your hurtful past and will be there for you in an uncertain future.

Although Surrender the Night is the second in a series the book could stand alone.  It was even more enjoyable to have read the first book though because you revisit a few of the characters and see where their lives have taken them.

The book has so many fully developed characters that I just couldn't pick my favorite.  Rose is the opposite of the headstrong, don't-need-a-man type of heroine that I've seen in a lot of other historical romance novels.  She is timid, scared of everything and unsure of herself.  Yet she is loveable.  Her uncle, another of my favorite characters, is an unrefined, thief-turned-pastor who is just delightful in the novel.  He also provides some much-needed comic relief.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this story.  It was simple, easy to follow, and had a good message.  The pacing was slower than I would have liked but it meant the romance between Alex and Rose was very well-developed.  It also had a Romeo & Juliet type feel to it.  All in all, a nice easy read for all ages.

I have to say that MaryLu's writing just jumps off the page. You can feel the emotions rolling toward you almost as if you are standing in the same room with her vibrant cast. I am really looking forward to reading more books by her. This one kept me engrossed and really interested up until the last page.

I appreciated all the emotions that go into MaryLu's writing. You can easily imagine the period clothing and feel the emotional struggles as they carry out their stories. Noah, bearing unbelievable scars and pain, trusting in what he believes is a trustworthy nation that really cannot be trusted at all. All of this including his engagement to someone he doesn't love in his attempt at pleasing a father who has never forgiven him for the past. And Marianne desperately seeking the help that she needs for her mother, dealing with the loss of a loved one and her own gaping feelings of inadequacy and loss. I think at some point we have all been in one of the two places. Trusting something that can't be trusted or feeling inadequate in whatever area that bothers each person. This story is not only a story of redemption and belonging, it is one of healing, hope and attaining the faith and forgiveness needed to move forward. Another running thread throughout this book is trust, learning to trust each other and more importantly learning to trust our Creator.

This was a marvelous read that is full of heart-pumping tension and swoon-worthy romance. Once again the author has impressed me with the beautiful way she weaves a story. I would highly recommend this book, especially to fans of historical, romantic fiction. Those who have enjoyed the author’s previous works will surely enjoy this as well. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Once again, MaryLu has crafted a stunningly beautiful historical novel. You really feel like you are in a vital piece of history as you read her books.

From tragedy, to intrigue, to danger, lies, tested faith, blackmail, unwanted suitors and just perhaps a budding romance, Surrender the Night takes you on an amazing ride of fiction.  I highly recommend it!

Surrender the Night is a beautiful written historical romance. With all MaryLu Tyndall's books you are guaranteed to be provided one of the best reading experiences in your life. Her talented pen knows how to write passages that take you deeper into the story. You will find that you will experience the pain, sorrow, and joy of each one of her characters. Author's such as MaryLu Tyndall are a rare treasure to behold. Once you experience one of her novels they become an addictive drug that you can't live without.

I loved this book! I could not put it down. The author does a wonderful job of taking history and writing a novel that draws you in. Again I loved how she wrote about God in this book. It was so real so powerful. I also enjoyed seeing Noah and Marianne again and how they played a small role in this story as well. Again I was drawn into what the people of that time must have been feeling as their capital city was burned.

SURRENDER NIGHT by MaryLu Tyndall is an amazing inspirational Christian romance set in 1814 Baltimore,Maryland. It is the second in the "Surrender to Destiny", and can be read as a stand alone, although some of the characters return in this story...This is an inspiring story of love, family forgiveness, saving a country, finding your faith.coming to terms with your past and moving toward a future with hope, faith, peace and most of all love,a home and family. This story is for all historical romance readers and is  full of adventure and danger with romance and love. Once again this author has made a story to treasure. It is a MUST READ and a keeper.

This Tyndall novel surprised me, because it was the first of MaryLu’s books not set at sea.  While British Navel Lieutenant Alexander Reed (who we met in Surrender the Heart) played a pivotal role, the story remained firmly anchored on land.
The themes of seeing people for who they are, rather than for the labels that we hang on them, and of overcoming fear by trust in God despite difficult life circumstances found purchase in my life.  And who doesn’t love a romance that develops against all odds?

A description-heavy story that authentically takes you back to the second war of independence. Characters are drawn with depth and sensitivity. A story of forgiveness, trust, hope and love.

I was so engrossed in this story, I was unable to put it down. This was one of the sweetest love stories I have read (and I read many!) I am looking forward to reading the next in this series, but these books are also fine as a stand alone.

Another great book by M.L.
I love how the story plays out and when the book ended I was sad I wanted more of this story. It was good seeing characters from the first book in your series and seeing where they are now and what has happened to them. Some of the secondary characters in this book really add to the story.  I cant wait for the last book in the series.

This book is a suspense thriller as both Alex and Rose’s lives are in serious danger from the beginning.  Don’t start this book late at night because it will be very difficult to put it down or stop thinking about it.  I recommend this book highly and am greatly looking forward to the next book in the series.

For me, there is nothing like a MaryLu Tyndall novel. She does stories and characterization unlike anyone else. Surrender the Night is a wonderfully drawn story about bitterness and forgiveness, set against a historical backdrop of the burning of Washington, D.C. I love a story (and an author) that can weave an enthralling adventure with historical authenticity that both entertains and educates. This story is one you don't want to miss!

I didn't know much about the war of 1812 until I started this series. I really loved this book. I loved the conflict of being loyal to your country or following your heart!! The characters had depth to them and I really wanted to more about them and follow there background and each step that they took. I also wanted to hate Alex but love him at the same time. It was a conflict that made the book more intriguing. This book was really hard to set down!

As ever it is a great addition to Marylu's books!

I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to MaryLu Tyndall and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Surrender the Night" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a copy available to me as a member of MaryLu's Motley Crew.

I have never been in the position to have my home raided during a time of war by enemy soldiers. However, the gifted writing of MaryLu Tyndall takes me to that terrifying place where British invaders challenge American freedom and engage in violent oppression during the War of 1812. "Surrender the Night" is the second novel in the Surrender to Destiny series, and paints a vivid picture of war-torn America fighting to confirm her independence from England.

The stage is set to the extent that the reader can smell the smoke of burning buildings. Baltimore in 1812 was a precarious place to be, and Rose McGuire is absolutely in a precarious place. Her parents are dead because of the British. She is fighting off the advances of an undesirable suitor. The fate of her family rests in her hands if her Uncle should be killed during the British raids on her land. When Alex Reed, the Second Lieutenant aboard a British ship, saves Rose from being ravished by his superior, the story twists even further. Injured in the altercation, Alex is at Rose's mercy - and under her care.

You may remember Alex from the first novel in the series, "Surrender the Heart". His gallant character and torn loyalties were evident in that wonderful book, and it makes his character pop off the page in this beautifully crafted romance. I eagerly await book three.

Surrender the Night is the second book in the surrender to Density series.

Rose has suffered abuse by people--both close, and strangers--and has hidden herself from society. Rose socializes with her animals on her farm and avoids town, except on rare occasions. Alexander has become disgusted by his country's treatment of the Americans. After protecting Rose and being shot he is forced to take refuge on her farm, putting him and her family in danger.

This book takes place all on land, during the War of 1812. Somewhat of a change from MaryLu Tyndall's other books. I love this book. It is possibly my favorite out of all her books--so far. Alex is a complete gentleman and loves Rose. This book has tender romance, not inappropriate, uncalled-for scenes, but still has passion. It is fast-paced and even gave me goosebumps at the end. It really made me appreciate my country more and despair at how different America is now. Surrender the Night is a must read.

Rose McGuire lives on a farm outside Baltimore, Maryland, and during the war of 1812 the British come ashore. Previously assaulted by a British officer, she ends up taking in and caring for an enemy who protected her from another attack by one of his own crew members. This war is often referred to as the second American revolution. MaryLu skillfully weaves together a tale that had this reader rooting for this unlikely couple to be able to have a life together.

Rose is a delightful character with a very winsome way. This is one of the few MaryLu Tyndall books set on land for the entire book. She certainly can develop a wonderful hero (even if he was on the enemy side!)

I read this on an e-reader. I liked the story so much that it was hard to have to sit down and think what to say about it. I love a book that pulls you into the story until the very end.

Great period details, which is to be expected since this is MaryLu's primary area of research and writing. Lovely writing. Well done!
