I do so love a spirited and spunky heroine and Rebecca is all that and more! But she's also a devout Quaker and I love the contradictions...which aren't really contradictions if she's following God's leading in her life. MacLaren has included lots of fascinating details about the Quakers that has left me with a greater understanding and respect for the faith.

Great family dynamics within the Albright clan provide the perfect backdrop for Rebecca and Clay's unlikely friendship. Neither are free to act on the attraction that threaten to draw them into a forbidden relationship. Angst and yearning, laughter and hope -- it's all such a tangled mess of delectable page-turning.

"God is designing us, piece by piece like so many quilts. In the moment, it's difficult to envision what we'll look like in the end, but He sees the finished product, and it is our place to trust Him to put us together as He sees fit."

Summer on Sunset Ridge captured my attention from the opening paragraph. This is the first book I've read by Sharlene MacLaren, but I will definitely be reading more of her books.

The realism of MacLaren's writing had me right there, whether I was in the home of the Quaker Albright's family, traveling after dark to assist with the Underground Railroad or with the struggles of Sheriff Clay Dayton. The authenticity of the Quaker faith and the history of an abolitionist during 1855 brought this story to life. I didn't want to stop reading till the end, except life stopped me at times, only to pick the book back up over lunch time and every other possible time till I knew what was happening. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me engaged page after page. Will Rebecca Albright be able to follow her heart or will she give in to an arranged marriage? How did Sheriff Dayton become involved with the Albright family, when he was a slave catcher?

The characters are true to life during the setting of this beautiful story with their own issues. They are filled with loyalty, resilience, faith, determination, and some that will discover a true love instead of going along with what was expected. The scriptural promises, prayers, love and faith of the Albright family gave depth and admiration to their lives. Sharlene MacLaren has a way with words that are powerful, emotional, and engaging that brought this amazing story to life.

I received a complimentary copy of Summer on Sunset Ridge from Whitaker Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review but have shared my honest thoughts. I look forward to reading Their Daring Hearts, book two of the Forever Series by Sharlene MacLaren.

Summer on Sunset Ridge by Sharlene Maclaren was a very enjoyable read. It is set just before the Civil War. Rebecca Dalton is a Quaker young lady and abolitionist who is determined to do her part to aid the Underground Railroad. Her parents have arranged a marriage that she is not agreeable to, but Quaker children are not supposed to buck their parents authority so she's trying very hard to accept the arranged marriage. One night, Rebecca sneaks out of the house and follows her father as he goes to help some runaway slaves on their road to freedom. What happens next will change the lives of Rebecca and her family forever.

I received a copy of this book from Whitaker House and TBCN in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Summer on Sunset Ridge by Sharlene MacLaren is book one in the Forever Freedom Series. This is the first novel of hers that I have read, but it certainly will not be the last. This novel is set near Philadelphia at the beginning of the Civil War. The central family lives on a Quaker farm and is involved in aiding the Underground Railroad.

Plainspoken Rebecca Albright, whose parents have dutifully arranged a suitable marriage to a man that they deem to be a good providerone in whom Rebecca has no interest or regard, is determined to aid the Underground Railroad movement. Sheriff Clay Dalton, whose life is also rather conflicted concerning his understood engagement to a spoiled, wealthy young woman who has directed the whole courtship with little thought to their vast differences, suspects that he may not be making the correct choice.

Clays pursuit of an escaped slave who killed a man, an injury and amnesia, a prolonged recovery, and a mutual attraction between a sheriff with possible ties to the South and perhaps commitment to a woman there and a pretty, young Quaker woman whose beliefs and determination to help in the Underground Railroad presents an engaging and entertaining story.

I recommend this book that I received through TBCN in exchange for an honest review. This Christian romance will not disappoint.

Rebecca Albright, lives on her Quaker familys farm near Philadelphia during a tumultuous time as the Civil War is brewing. Through circumstances she created her father demands that she nurse the man who he shot back to health. When the man becomes conscious they discover he has amnesia. The familys only course of action is to help him recover, gain his strength, and hopefully regain his memory so he can return from wherever he came from. Rebecca is quite reluctant and wants nothing to do with him accept to dress his wounds and feed him. She struggles with how her faith fits in with the slavery issue, how she as a woman can assist in the Underground Railroad, and also, keep from involving her emotions with this unknown man under her care. Does God have plans for her? It seems He does but she will need to trust him on Sunset Ridge. I really enjoyed this novel by Sharlene MacLaren!

I received a copy from the The Book Club Network and the author. All thoughts are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
