First things first - this book is hardcover which is a plus. Its cover is mostly appealing. I'm not sure how exquisite of a cover one can get on a book about public speaking. :)

Baldwin puts forth great effort into providing detail on how to find a topic you are passionate about, preparing and delivering talks, establishing expertise and creating products from becoming a speaker. I was mostly interested in how one writes up a manuscript and speech and Baldwin accomplished this goal for me. He also provides tremendous grace in that, no speech is ever perfect. Whew! We can breathe now.

The author also has a chapter on utilizing technology, which is helpful since I'm not always the greatest at remembering how to use certain tools. He even gives recommendations on what to wear and what not to wear. Finally, he even prepares you for when things go wrong. I think he's about covered ever detail from learning what you are passionate about to creating products in the future off of your speaking platform.

This is for sure a book I will be referencing whenever I need to do some public speaking. I don't plan on becoming a speaker for a living, but this book provides valuable information in preparing for speeches and researching topics we are passionate about. I would recommend it for anyone needing a quick 101 on public speaking or even for the person that plans on building a career in public speaking.

*I was provided a free copy of this book from the publisher in return for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review.

When I say what I do it's not that this is by any means a spoiler alert: I don't know who Grant Baldwin is. Aside from that, have I enjoyed this wonderful book? Indeed. He has wonderful ideas about what makes for a successful speaker and how to make it happen. Let's dive in a bit more, shall we?

From the get go Grant starts off showing us through some wonderful and incredible stories of people who have made speaking their primary money-maker. Yes, they all started in one industry (whether it's journalism, business, ministry, whatever) and shifted it where they were doing more and sharing the things they all have learned to make better speakers. So, what is the overall aim of the book? I would have to say to explore, in-depth, as to if speaking is a valid way to make even more money. It's not for everyone. Those who are introverts can break into speaking publicly, but if you absolutely are horrified by the thought of it, this book isn't for you.

For me, I have enjoyed reading the book. While I am not a professional speaker by any means I do not get the same kind of sick butterfly feeling as I did as a singer/songwriter/guitarist. Do I still write songs? Occasionally. I prefer to focus on writing, be it a book review or about how to take active steps in being an authentic Christ-follower. With that said, I received a complimentary copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

    - The importance of identifying a topic that connects with an audience and suggestions for narrowing your interests.

    - Reasons to be a workshop speaker at a conference.

    - 4 ways you can structure your talk.

    - Importance of using stories in your speech.

    - Fears that can affect your performance and suggestions for overcoming those fears.

    - Importance of practicing your talk prior to the actual presentation.

    - How to engage your audience.

Many other topics are covered. The book is easy to read and full of practical insights and suggestions. Good read for anyone wanting to make a living as a public speaker or wanting to improve your communication skills. Recommended.

I was given a review copy by Baker Books in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
