Series: American Revolutionary War Adventures
In this second book in the American Revolutionary War Adventure series, Submarines, Secrets and a Daring Rescue, twins Ambrose and John Clark find themselves volunteering for another mission to help the newly forming United States. Inspired by their success in delivering a secret message to General George Washington himself, the boys step up to help transport much-needed gunpowder to the patriots and end up in an even more dangerous situation, trying to man one of the first submarines and then, later, attempting a prison break to rescue one of their older brothers.
Rachel F.5 Stars Out Of 5Great Historical Fiction Book for Young ReadersDecember 15, 2015Rachel F.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Submarines, Secrets & A Daring Rescue is a book geared towards children 8-12 years old and is great at bringing history into a fiction book yet making it exciting and interesting for young readers. The authors, Robert J. Skead and Robert A. Skead, take the reader on a journey into the lives of two 15 year old twins during the Revolutionary War. They lead us on exciting adventures like bringing secret messages to special recipients, sailing through the night with the world's first submarine used in combat (fiction) and fight off theives. As the title suggests they also have to rescue someone very close to them whom I won't disclose; you will just have to read it yourself.
Personally I found this book exciting from front to back. As it is written for younger children, I finished it within a few hours so it is a very easy read. The fact that it is exciting will keep kids intrigued with no worries of it gathering dust on the bookshelf before it is finished. I am especially fond of the fact that small bits of history are pieced together in this book in subtle ways.
At the end of the book there is a good amount of discussion questions, so this would be a great book for a young adult book club. It also has a Glossary explaining some of the terms in the book as well as Historical Letters, one of which is from George Washington to Thomas Jefferson.
American History is an important topic for young children as it almost seems lost in our fast paced world. To get kids interested and more involved emotionally is a great idea and I found this book a great read. Even my 5 year old was interested in it as I read it out loud and demands it be kept on his book shelf until he can read it himself. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
*I received this book from Book Look Bloggers to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% my own.
Debbie MWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Good fiction book to interest youth in history!August 30, 2015Debbie MWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is book 2 in the kids historical fiction, and it picks up where the first book left off. The twins, Ambrose and John, are asked to deliver a secret letter, and then find out their older brother has been captured. So, they take on their older brother's secret mission of going on the first submarine to launch an attack on the British warships. They later decide to try to rescue their older brother Berty from certain death for being a traitor. Will they be able to rescue him? Who is telling all their secrets to the British and Loyalists? Who shot their father? Can they go against all odds and successfully work the submarine to blow up a British ship, AND get away?? Read the book to find out these answers!!
The book was really good. Well, once I got a hold of the book--I had to wrestle it away from my 12 year old son. LOL The book really holds your attention, and leaves you anxiously awaiting book 3! This is a beautiful hardcover book--I love hardcover books for youth, as they hold up so much better for lots of hands to handle.
At the end of the book, it has a section on notes from the story tellers, discussion questions, a glossary, and historical letters that were interesting to read The main part of the book is 180 pages, but with the extra information, it is 206 pages. This would be a good read aloud book to the whole family.
I received this hardcover book free from the publisher for my honest review.
