Kris BushOrlando, FLAge: 25-34Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5It's good enoughSeptember 25, 2019Kris BushOrlando, FLAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3Much like Empowered, Strong features the biographies of 11 men who have championed their faith in Jesus. Prior to reading this book, I'd only heard of two of them Jim Elliot, husband of Elisabeth Elliot, and famed baseball player Jackie Robinson. Each man has been chosen for a specific attribute that they represented such as humility, compassion, and endurance. I'll be honest I'm not much of a Jim Elliot fan, so his inclusion is one I'm not particularly interested in.
I also noticed she chose men who have no controversy and reform attached to them. It's as if she stuck to appealing to a conservative audience. There is no mention of men like Martin Luther King Jr who as a pastor used his faith to help bridge gaps and bring positive progress during the civil rights movement.
For the most part, I think it is still a decent book. It would be an interesting read for youth of all ages to read and learn about people who followed their beliefs no matter the cost. My plan is to have my kids read both this book and Empowered as I think they could learn a great deal about apologetics from them. And for that reason, I definitely would recommend to other moms for their home library as people of all ages could learn from their stories.
FYI: Received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
Rebekah Hargraves5 Stars Out Of 5Must-Read for the Young Men in Your Life!August 27, 2019Rebekah HargravesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I recently reviewed Catherine Parks' biographical work for girls, Empowered, so jumped at the opportunity to read and review her newest book, a biographical work for boys. "Strong" is categorized as juvenile non-fiction, making it the perfect read for your middle schooler. I, however, thoroughly enjoyed it myself, as well, and learned quite a bit in reading it. Therefore, my recommendation would be to view this book, as well as Catherine's book for girls, as a fantastic family read-aloud that everyone can enjoy and learn from. Another reason I encourage you to read this book along with your children is because it will undoubtedly spark some pretty amazing conversations, so you want to make sure you're there for that!
"Strong" shares how God worked in and through the lives of 11 men and what we can learn from their examples:
Alvin York: Generosity
George Mueller: Faith
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Courage
Brother Andrew: Obedience
Elka of the Wai Wai: Standing Alone
Eric Liddell: Knowing What Matters
John Newton: Godly Ambition
William Carey: Humility
George Liele: Compassion
Jim Elliot: Sacrificial Love
Jackie Robinson: Endurance
I entered into the reading of this book already familiar with several of the men in this list, but certainly not all. And even when reading the biographical sketches of men I already knew of, I still learned quite a bit I had not known before, making it thoroughly enjoyable.
Catherine's writing style really pulls you into the story, while also making it very readable and easily accessible. What I really love, too, about the way the book is set up is that each of the 11 chapters ends in the same way: with a mini essay, if you will, offering a takeaway lesson of how you can live out the character quality you read about and apply it to your own life. Then follows a series of reflection questions and Bible study questions. With all that in mind, I look forward to the day when I can share this book with my own little boy and watch it expand his mind in the areas of history and Bible, both.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think you will, as well! It would make the perfect addition to your family's library or even to your homeschool curriculum. It is sure to inspire the boys in your life with vision, purpose, and excitement over the myriad of ways that God can use them to make a difference right where they are.

Academy2525 Stars Out Of 5Catherine Parks biographies are a winner!!!July 25, 2019Academy252Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5These books (both Empowered and Strong) are a collection of short biographies of men and women in history who have made a real difference for the Kingdom of God. Their lives and testimonies are enormously inspiring. In each book, Parks shares each man or woman's battle as they fought to live their lives for the Lord and how that turned into a great witness to those around them and to us today. The books are written for younger people middle school and high school aged teens and younger than middle if you have a stronger reader in your circle. Each book has a built in study guide and can be easily used in a classroom setting.
When God is your power source He will do mighty things with your life. None of these men or women ever sought to be famous or influential. They merely surrendered their lives to Christ and sought to be obedient to His teachings.
All of these men and women had one thing in common Jesus changed their lives to matter for Him and His Kingdom. Each beautiful story is closed out with a section to show teens how they can live lives of courage and faithfulness for the Kingdom of God. There are questions for group discussion with each chapter, as well.
Each biography has a beautifully hand drawn black and white picture of the man or woman at the beginning of each chapter. There is also a quote from each under the pictures.
These would be fantastic books to study with your Sunday School or youth groups. They could certainly be used in a homeschool setting or with your sons and/or daughters in your home otherwise. I think these are valuable resources to encourage the young people in your life to stand for something that matters to live separately from the world and to bring glory and honor to God in their lives no matter how insignificant they may think they might seem right now. In God's plan we all matter and have a purpose.
Kendra4 Stars Out Of 5biographies of faithful menJuly 22, 2019KendraSimilar in style to Empowered for girls, Catherine Parks returns with a companion book for boys featuring brief biographies of eleven men who were empowered by God to do powerful things for his kingdom. With simple language, larger print and wide spacing, this book is perfect for introducing boys ages 9-12 to these men of faith. Each chapter features a brief biography, followed by a short devotional-type reflection and four to six questions to help the reader apply Scripture and the lesson to his own life.
The men featured are as follows: Alvin York: Generosity, George Mueller: Faith, Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Courage, Brother Andrew: Obedience, Elka of the Wai Wai: Standing Alone, Eric Liddell: Knowing What Matters, John Newton: Godly Ambition, William Carey: Humility, George Liele: Compassion, Jim Elliot: Sacrificial Love, and Jackie Robinson: Endurance.
I thought the author did a good job of selecting a wide variety of men to feature. She emphasized how these were ordinary men who loved God and allowed him to use them in and in spite of their weaknesses and failures. I also liked that she didn't stop with just the biography, but included the application section to help readers really learn from the lives and experiences of these men. As an Anabaptist and believer in nonresistance, a few of the examples (i.e. Alvin York, who believed in nonresistance and then abandoned that position in favor of "justifiable circumstances" and became a war hero) would make me reluctant to recommend this book for my sons unless we were reading it together and discussing areas of theological difference.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher (B&H) in exchange for my review.
FayJac5 Stars Out Of 5Great book for young men!July 20, 2019FayJacHaving read Empowered by the same author, a book about famous women for girls, I was delighted to see this book which is written in the same line for boys. This book is subtitled, "How God Equipped 11 Ordinary Men with Extraordinary Power (and Can Do the Same for You)." Strength can be other than physical. These men prayed for strength to endure, to be bold, to trust God, to be obedient and He gave them His strength and power.
Along with well-known names like Jackie Robinson, Jim Elliot, John Newton, Eric Liddell, etc., there are some little known names such as Elka of the Wai Wai and George Liele. Each of these men went out of their way to be obedient to God in different ways and made a difference in many people's lives.
This book will encourage young men and boys to follow and depend on God for strength and lifts up these ordinary men as role models for them to follow. This is a great book and I hope many young men will read it!
