L. B. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917, during which time they helped found the Oriental Missionary Society. When Mr. Cowman's poor health forced the couple to return to the United States, Mrs. Cowman turned her attention to caring for her husband until his death six years later. Out of Mrs. Cowman's experiences and heartbreak came her first book, Streams in the Desert, followed by its companion Springs in the Valley. During the next twenty-five years, Mrs. Cowman inspired several nationwide Scripture distribution campaigns and wrote seven more books. Finally, on Easter Sunday in 1960, at the age of ninety, Mrs. Cowman met face-to-face the God she had served so faithfully for nearly a century.

Mike5 Stars Out Of 5Streams in the DesertJanuary 11, 2017MikeQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the greatest daily devotional ever written. I've read many but this is the best. I'm going on my 12th year of reading it daily and it still moves me. I have purchased too many copies to number to give out to different people. CBD makes it an affordable purchase to do this. The price was right and the content of the book is priceless.

SunshineMichiganGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5LOVE!!!! FAVORITE DEVOTIONAL OF ALL TIME - permanently hooked!!January 13, 2016SunshineMichiganGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bought this for my sister in 2012 for her birthday... but wound up falling in love with it myself and reading it more than she did. Eventually got a copy for myself and gave hers back to her... then she fell in love with it too!!!! :D
That year as I was plunged into deep valleys, for the first time I had an oasis of never-ending strength. I didn't just endure, I grew. I found reserves of strength and hidden riches in the Word, I had firgotten. SITD has the perfect mix of Scripture, devotional thoughts, and poetry. Plus its in the beautiful old way of saying things... It's my favorite go-to for encouragement and help. Recommended to all my friends, have purchased and given away probably somewhere between 80 and 100 copies in the last couple years, as gifts to my camp girls, friends, etc. Cannot say it enough, outside of the Bible itself, only 4 other books have left this big of an impact on me, and I read tons of books. This is my FAVORITE devotional, EVER!!!!!!!! If you haven't read it? Do so!! It's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D 1,000% inspired by the Lord!!!!! :D
Tennfarmer5 Stars Out Of 5It get's better with ageDecember 29, 2014TennfarmerI reckon, because the times are so shallow and Christian thinking so fallow, the 'older' devotionals begin to shine brighter as they age. It seems the wisdom and stern admonitions of yesteryear become more welcome as the "anything goes" attutide of the modern believer and his church prevails. Thank God for markers of the faith, as they show us the old paths that were trustworthy to our fathers, and will also be such to us. This devotional is read daily, year after year, by my wife and I. Truths that cannot be shaken are in this book; and the poetry displays the tenderness of our Saviors heart like nothing else can do. We bought four of them to give to our 'kids' and grandchildren who are beginning their own housekeeping. It seems a worthy tradition of our home to pass on to them.
