Publisher's Description

How would you explain your life to a stranger?

When strangers meet today, they often ask not, "What do you do?" but, "What is your story?" Everybody on the planet believes some larger story in order to make sense of the smaller story of his or her life. We want our lives to fit within a larger plot—a plot full of history, forward movement, and future.

So, the better question to ask is, "What sort of story are you in?"

Most people believe false stories that leave them disillusioned, enslaved, and hopeless. Secular stories of chasing success and religious stories of doing good works leave us feeling exhausted and empty. Only Christianity offers a story that's big enough to make sense of both the beauty and brokenness in our lives and in our world.

Editorial Reviews

To write a book with two distinct audiences in mind—Christian and non-Christian—is no easy task, but Buzzard has done a fine job. Believers in particular will find helpful tips for using "the big story" to frame evangelistic conversations. Non-Christian readers should benefit from its generally solid overview of the major beats of the story of redemption. This is a good book that will hopefully be used to strengthen many and bring others to their knees in faith before Jesus.
Aaron Armstrong, review for The Gospel Coalition

The Big Story has a powerful message for young adults searching for a connection between their own lives and the message of the Scriptures. Buzzard highlights his main points by using the Bible as well as personal examples and quotations from men and women throughout history. This book challenges readers to learn about their faith and put it into action.
Congregational Libraries Today, Volume XIVII, Number 1

Buzzard gets it right. Life is Story. And he connects that to the Big Story of the Gospel in helping readers find the purpose and direction their lives.

The Big Story by Justin Buzzard is a simple, uncomplicated, eight chapter walk through the Bible.

He tackles the areas of Jesus, God, Creation, Rebellion, Rescue, Intermission, Home, and Life, all deep topics, but the author explains them with such ease, that both the church, unchurched, new Christians, and mature Christians will all glean deeper understanding of how the oldest book relates to our life.

Maybe you have some friends who you'd like to tell the Gospel message, but have felt that you did not have the correct dialogue to do so. This is the book to share to "break the ice." Maybe you just want a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Book you've based your life upon. This is the book for you. We all have a story, and every story begins with the Bible and how it fits into The Big Story.

The idea of story has fascinated me for several years. Elsewhere I have written on Three Stories: Mine, Theirs and God's. In my work, I interact with others who are seeking to make sense of their life story. I usually share a part of my story as a way of trying to offer helpful guidance. Most of the men I interact with hope that their story will be a meaningful part of a larger story.

The biblical story goes something like this: God Created humanity with the longing that they would be in a love relationship with him. His creation was perfect and full of open fellowship. Along with angels, humanity Rebelled. The result of this rebellion is a story of brokenness, difficulty and confusion in the world and our lives.

"What sort of story am I in?" All of us need to consider this question. In The Big Story, author Justin Buzzard asks us to consider the possibility that the story of the Bible might have some answers to the large questions of life. Buzzard's expressed conviction is that there is only "one story big enough to adequately_ express all the beauty and brokenness we see in this world." God's Big Story is the narrative that Buzzard believes answers the big questions of life.

The Big Story starts in the middle of the biblical story by presenting Jesus as the most important character in our stories. Jesus is the one who came offering forgiveness, love and freedom. The rest of the book is the Christian gospel in five acts: God, Creation, Rebellion, Rescue, Home, an Intermission (a presentation of the "road to Jesus"), and finally an epilogue to the story: Life.

The Big Story is a well written, fresh presentation of the Christian gospel. The book would be a great way to present God's story as an answer to life's large questions. It is a good book for searching pre-Christian people, new Christians who need an easy summary of the Gospel message as well as long-time Christians who need a refresher of the simple Gospel. Each chapter is full of applications from both modern life and from the biblical story. Buzzard ends each chapter with a Story Contrast (a contrast of the message of the chapter to a prevailing viewpoint counter to the gospel), an Action Step and Recommended Reading.

Buzzard ends the book with a challenge to the reader to live big. The Big Story of God is an answer to our feeling of inadequacy. We are not to shrink in the face of the difficulties that are part of this world.

Jesus is calling us to play big, to take the life He's given us and maximize every bit of it. He is calling us to take the grace and the story He has given and play big. We are to position our lives for maximum fruitfulness. To avoid doing so is sin. It's easy to name sin as lying or lusting or stealing; it's just as much of a sin to waste our lives. It is a sin to hold back, to play small.

The God who created us is on our side. He went big in creating all that is. When his creation rebelled, he went big again in providing a rescue. The Big Story is a call for us to live big and to find our "big" role to play in shaping the Big Story of God's continuing work in our world. I heartily recommend Justin Buzzards book as a great addition to your library.
