Nothing is more comforting than the gift of friendship when the storms of life rage. The concept of a storm sister is immediately clear to women, and the response is either the joy of experiencing that kind of relationship, or the longing to experience it. Publishing veteran Afton Rorvik paints a beautiful picture of the characteristics of a friendship that is there in all seasons of life, including the storms. Through poignant personal stories and the stories of others, Afton covers topics as diverse as resisting the urge to fix a friends problems, rejoicing with those who rejoice, and the fine art of listening well.
Afton Rorvik has been a part of the publishing industry since 1987, editing a myriad of adult nonfiction books for the CBA market, while working with both first-time and best-selling authors. Her articles have appeared in Discipleship Journal, Guideposts, and NAB Today. She is a graduate of Wheaton College with a degree in literature as well as a teaching certificate in secondary education. She and her husband John are the parents of two adult children and live in Wheaton, Illinois.

Grandman5 Stars Out Of 5It's all about sisters and loveFebruary 23, 2017GrandmanQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Sometimes in life we have so much to do and sometimes especially with family, one person thinks they are doing more than their share especially when it comes to taking care of your parents. This book teaches us that sisters are more than immediate family and why we are here on this earth to help serve others. The scriptures that were incorporated into the book will bring it all into perspective on helping others, love, hope and being generous with time. It teaches what friends and sisters should really be about. I recommend this for a bible study and a great gift to give someone when they feel all the work load is on them. Every church should have their members read this and that goes for the males also. Actually, the author should think about writing one for the male figures through her experience with her brothers through her dark time. This was a great "picker-upper". Thank you for an eye waking experience.

Even at our worst. And my best self wants to walk through storms holding the umbrella for my dearest friends.
The book chronicles all of the storm sisters that wove in and out of Aftons life as she walked with her mother through her final months of earthly life and afterwards. Women who came with the right word, a prayer, a casserole, or tears. Afton relates how she opened up to let others in and what freedom there was in that seemingly easy act. She also tells of walking with friends through their storm and rejoicing with those who rejoice.
Each chapter has a thought provoking What If? question to help you explore your own reality of friendship. Some are very practical and others ask questions such as What would happen if extroverts consciously listened more and introverts worked at talking more? Afton believes that journaling is a useful tool to help us walk through storms, remember the truth of Gods Word and recall to mind those times where He has been faithful.
There is a study guide at the end of the book that would be an excellent resource for you or a small group to work through together. A quick and thought provoking read.
EvelynAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Storm Sisters, Friends Through All SeasonsSeptember 4, 2014EvelynAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5It took a great deal of self-discipline for me to do only one chapter a day! The authors faith in writing this book "moved a mountain" by getting me to journal my answers to the well-written, thought-provoking questions, read the chapter, and then write my answers to "Learning from the Bible". Those verses were unusual, yet so appropriate for the principle being illustrated! The questions were clear and proceeded well to make the point and lead to a change of outlook and behavior. Often it seemed as if Afton Rorvik had read my mind before asking the question. My heart and mind can now see even more clearly how women need each other, as vessels of God's outpouring love and sponges to receive His wisdom and perspective. Afton gave just the right amount of details to draw me in and be thirsty to read more, followed by learning what God has to say to me on these very relevant principles. I admire her courage and selflessness to reveal this very personal experience to inspire others to make similar connections. The author lives what she wrote! That makes it very strong! This format could work very well for a women's weekly Bible study or Friday/Saturday retreat with one chapter per hour. Superbly done from cover to cover!
