Melissa2 Stars Out Of 5Disappointed in Historical MistakesMarch 18, 2015MelissaI'm a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. The former person was on the Mayflower as a cooper, or barrel-fixer. The latter was the daughter of William Mullins, who was a shoe merchant from Dorking, Surrey, and he was part of the London Adventurers merchants' group. Shortly after arriving in Plymouth, Massachusetts, he died. This "shoe merchant" fellow was accurately represented in Schoolhouse Rock of all places, but NOT in this book. How disappointing!
This is from Stories of the Pilgrims: "A number of strangers came to John Robinson's meeting one morning. Some of these strangers were English people who had not come from Scrooby. Some were from France, where their king had treated them as cruelly as King James had treated the Pilgrims. Among them were Master and Mistress Mullens (sic), and their two children, Joseph and Priscilla ...."
It's sadly a disservice to history to suggest that the Mullins family were up in Holland among the separatists! William Mullins was considered a "stranger" and not one of the "separatist" group. There were three distinct groups on the Mayflower -- the London Merchants, the Leiden Separatists, and the crew -- and they all had interesting roles as they had to work together.
My children know this history about the Mayflower, so when I got to this part I stammered and I had to stop reading. It was so humiliating to have chosen a book for them that was inaccurate. I threw it away.
sao20125 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful storyAugust 29, 2012sao2012Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Stories of the Pilgrims is a beautiful historical account of the journey of the Pilgrims. Beginning at Scrooby Inn, journeying through Holland, their arrival in New England, the first Thanksgiving and ending with short stories, this book re-tells the journey vividly and accurately. My children loved this book and I enjoyed reading an extended account unlike anything I ever heard growing up. A must-read!
Kathy1 Stars Out Of 5March 10, 2009KathyI purchased a copy of the Christian Liberty Press edition of this book to accompany our Beautiful Feet Early American History study.Overall I was disappointed with the book.Christian Liberty Press has "rewritten" Margaret Pumphrey's classic story to make it sanitary in order to reflect the beliefs of the Reformed Church/Christian Liberty School.Yes, bad things have happened in history, but we must keep history accurate by sticking to the facts, not reading someone's interpretation of how they view it. In the end I returned my copy to Christian Liberty Press and ordered a reprint of the original classic from Yesterday's Classic book company.
Michelle Gowler5 Stars Out Of 5October 3, 2008Michelle GowlerMy 8 year old and I both loved this book. A major improvement over boring history textbooks! The comprehension questions and vocabulary words at the end of each story are a good idea, too.
