The period from 1861–1865 proved to be one of the greatest periods of trial and suffering in our nation's history. A significant lapse of time had passed since America had engaged in the horrors of war. After the war of 1812, little memory remained of the fact that war could be “hell.” A veteran of the war with Mexico, General “Stonewall” Jackson wrote to his wife and said, “People who are anxious to bring on war don’t know what they are bargaining for; they don’t see all the horrors that must accompany such an event.”When the prospect of a War Between the States became a reality, the average age of a young soldier was twenty-two. To an aspiring young man who was bored with “life on the farm,” the romanticism and exhilaration of battle was an allurement that soon tried the faith and physical stamina of all who crossed war’s threshold. The threat of losing life and limb from a hailstorm of bullets and shrapnel was compounded by the ever-present danger of dysentery, and all sorts of diseases with little means for treatment. In spite of these frustrating circumstances, many of the soldiers found great consolation and relief through prayer and reading the Bible.Stories of Faith and Courage from the Civil War is a devotional book that opens a rare treasure chest of intimate thoughts and feelings illustrated from the private letters and diaries of both men and women of faith during the Civil War period. The courage and faith examples of these “soldiers of Christ” will inspire both the mind and heart of every reader who desires to have a closer walk with God.

Jeremy Wootten5 Stars Out Of 5June 22, 2009Jeremy WoottenThis book has been an enjoyable daily read. Blending historical insight and spiritual truth, it is truly a reminder from the voices of the past to keep pressing on for Christ. Even if history is not your favorite subject, the author brings out the characters from the past, and enables them to teach us how to follow Christ today.
jim5 Stars Out Of 5December 12, 2007jimThis book will inspire you to the max! It is well written and has a balanced view of the Civil War. Tuley gives several stories of the atrocities committed against African Americans and reveals their great courage and faith in spite of abuse from wicked slave owners.
Stacy Mccann4 Stars Out Of 5August 30, 2007Stacy MccannOn the contrary to other viewers who may have not read the entire book, it does NOT spiritualize atrocities. Tuley uncovers several letters from generals in the civil war who despised the war and called it "judgment on the United States for it's allowance of a horrid sin such as slavery". The sinful heart of man is universal, and the grace of God softens and deepens faith despite the horrors of any age, specificially this dark period in America's heritage. It's a well done insight into how people from another time dealt with horror and pain: a universal transcendent evil man has suffered since the days of Adam. A very good read that puts suffering into perspective under God's perfect plan.
Russell5 Stars Out Of 5July 6, 2007RussellThis book is excellent! Tuley brings forth faith examples of both northern and southern men and women who exemplified strong Christian faith during a very dark time in American history. Tuley's treatment of the remarkable faith of these "Christian Soldiers" stir the heart and inspire the Christian to draw near to the Lord.
