"A poignant travelogue of generations past and present, searching for God in lost places. After reading the first page of We Stood Upon Stars, its obvious Rogers love for adventure and desire to invite everyone else along! I was swept up in love like an ocean, grief like a desert, and peace like a river that flowed through every chapter. From the waves of Ventura, CA to starlight in the desert, to the taco truck in Marfa, TX, I got lost in the stories of Roger and his family as they learned not only about the beauty of each destination, but the beauty of the journey it takes to get there."
Leslie Jordan, All Sons & Daughters

He paints these pages with words so vivid and picturesque that you can almost smell the Rocky Mountain air, feel the salty water of the ocean, or experience the tug of a wild trout on the end of a fly line. Roger is writing the powerful story every man, every father, and every adventurer dreams about living, but for Roger its not a dream. Its his life. And like a wise teacher, hes showing us how it can be our life too."

M Wall5 Stars Out Of 5Adventurous ReadMay 27, 2017M WallQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Such a great and inspiring read! I've always had a love for traveling outside of the United States and this book has inspired me to want to travel more in my own "backyard". As a Ventura native the chapters on Ventura resonated with me about having a love/hate relationship with my hometown. I highly recommend this book to anyone who love traveling. Great buy for those adventurous dads for fathers day!
Brian Hays5 Stars Out Of 5Great book to bring fishing!May 11, 2017Brian HaysQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0What a fun adventure! Roger walks the reader through his tales of the wester US. Consisting of great eateries, coffee shops, pubs, fly fishing diamonds and great people, Roger winds you through the ups and downs of being a man, being married and raising boys and owning a van. It's filled with laughter, tears, embarrassment, and deep thoughts. It's really an enjoyable read with just enough of a splash to make you wonder how it all came to be. I've bought several copies to hand out to close friends. You would be wise to do the same!
Treenz5 Stars Out Of 5Fantastic book - so unique and enjoyableMay 9, 2017TreenzQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book really blew me away! It is so unlike any book I've ever read before! I really enjoyed it a lot. Roger has a way of weaving experiences, drawing the reader in to experience them with him. His style of writing is so relatable and easy to read. This is a really enjoyable, different kind of book. He draws you in and you just can't put it down. It almost feels like a friend sharing their experiences with you, where you feel you are right there with them. And it's not the normal type of thing you would read about either - well for me anyway, this was really unique.
Roger has based each chapter on a place relevant to that chapter. The maps are artistically drawn and full of interesting details that he has collected on his journeys or learned from friends - they alone are a real interesting read. Roger writes with humor and candor, and is very articulate and warm.
This book is the kind of book you can really relax with and enjoy. I would highly recommend it for everyone!
Please note that I was sent a copy of this book for purposes of review however the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Tstenner5 Stars Out Of 5Adventure awaitsMay 3, 2017TstennerQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5How do you find something you didn't know you were missing?
I was pleasantly surprised at the insightful essays that Roger has written and how they are an honest look at everyday life. You are invited into his thoughts and glimpse his struggles, laced with humor, as he finds his footing in life traveling the West. The beginnings of finding love and starting a family, being able to find friends that keep him honest as well as working through the grief of losing his grandfather. These stories are about changing his priorities, and having adventures with his young family via a VW van that often turns on Roger.
One quote that has stuck with me: "I hear God better in lost places, where no one else tampers with His voice." (pg 211) In my life, this has been very true.
As I read each story, it sparked a new fire. I want to let go of the things that take time away from my family. I want the warmth of the sun, long drives to new places and to hear belly laughs from the backseat. These stories made me yearn to get outside, explore, be present and spend time with my family. Even if that means getting lost in the process.
