As more and more people are living longer than they once did, research keeps growing on how to keep us fit in every area. One of the major fields of study focuses on how to keep our brains functioning as healthily as possible. Of specific concern is how to keep our memory working optimally.

In his new release, Stones of Remembrance, Dr. Amen focuses on the significance of memory. He writes:

Memory enables us to bring the joys, dreams, and lessons of yesterday into today. As we recall Gods faithfulness, we remain centered and growing, and we move forward with a sense of purpose. Memory allows us to keep our loved ones close, even when they are far away. It assures us that our personal history and experiences matter that we have something valuable to teach generations to come.

From this foundation and biblical base that God designed our brains to remember, the author reminds us that throughout the Bible we are encouraged and commanded to remember. When we remember His Word and stay in touch with His promises, we are more likely to stay on course. We know how key that is to us spiritually, but Dr. Amen goes on to point out how vital it also is to our brain health.

But its not just our spiritual well-being that benefits from remembering. Participating in regular spiritual practices such as Scripture meditation, memorization, and prayer also contributes to a healthier mind and body by reducing stress, increasing brain capacity, and even guarding against memory loss The stronger your brain becomes, the stronger your memory becomes. And the stronger your memory becomes, the stronger you become.

I have had the opportunity to participate in several teaching workshops presented by Dr. Amen as a part of my clinical counselor continuing education and learned so many things we can do personally to impact our brains and overall health. It was a delight to be able to review his new book.

"Stones of Remembrance" is a book of Scripture verses to read when afraid, angry, etc., or to memorize to strengthen your memory. In the first section, the author very briefly summarized his points in "Memory Rescue" on Rest, Exercise, Meditation and Prayer, Eating healthy, Meaningful work, Bonding with others, Relaxation, Absolution, New learning, Concentration, Enjoyment, and Socialization. Under each of these subsections, he included several verses relating to that topic. Since topics like exercise aren't directly addressed in the Bible, some verses were a bit of a stretch. For exercise, he suggested verses about running the race or God giving us strength.

The second section contained 12 Scripture verses each "to remember when" you're anxious, grateful, afraid, depressed, happy, lonely, sick, angry, tired, impatient, unsure of yourself, experience doubt, need hope, need comfort, or need strength. The third section had 12 Scripture verses that "every Christian should know."

At the back of the book, the author included tips for memorizing verses, a list of healthy snacks for boosting your memory, and a list of activities that can help improve your memory (like doing crossword puzzles or learning something new). I'd expected information about studies on how Scripture memorization helps your brain, so I was disappointed. But I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy collections of verses for reference or memorization.

I received this book as a free review copy from the publisher.

Stones of Remembrance by Daniel G. Amen is a book full of encouraging scriptures. Amen has taken may scriptures from the Bible and put them in different categories that can help us in our daily lives. If you're feeling lonely, flip to the chapter on loneliness. Feeling joyful? Turn to the list of scriptures on joy. The is the perfect book for when you don't know where to find a scripture in the Bible, but you know the category it would fall into. I would recommend this book to people of any and all ages!
