The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Unique Family addresses one of the top current concerns about youth and the church: the reality that nearly half of all young people raised in Christian families walk away from their faith when they graduate from high school. Thats the bad news. But heres the good news: research also shows that parents are one of the primary influences on their childs faith.
This book arises from the innovative, research-based, and extensively field-tested project known as "Sticky Faith," designed to equip parents with insights and ideas for nurturing long-term faith in children and young people. Because of the Fuller Youth Institutes six years of research with more than 500 young people, 100 churches, and 50 families, four of this guidebooks unique qualities make it a "must have" for families eager to point their young people toward long-term faith.
First, its grounded in sophisticated, academically verified data. While Dr. Powell is a parent of three children who authentically weaves her own experiences throughout the book, the chapter topics correlate with parenting principles proven in national research.
Second, it is positive. Amid gloomy and theoretical resources, this book leaves parents empowered and hopeful that even little tweaks to their family rhythms can make a big difference.
Third, it is practical. Readers get what they want most: more than 100 ideas from other parents they can try today, this week, or this month.
Fourth, its "guidebook" format is accessible. For busy parents who dont have time and inclination to read, this format is a welcome resource that they can return to time and time again for fresh ideas and inspiration.
Dr. Kara E. Powell is an educator, professor, youth minister, author, and speaker. So strong, they are never lead away from it. The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family by Dr. Kara E. Powell offers tools and practical ideas to put your family on the path to lasting faith.
I really enjoyed reading this book and discovering new fun things to do as a family. There are so many to choose from, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the number of new traditions you could add to your family routine. Dr. Powell suggests only taking five away from the entire book. Most of the ideas shared are applicable to families with children of all ages. One of my favorite thoughts was for family members to share at dinner time a mistake they have made during the day. This would be huge for my five-year-old who dwells on his mistakes. The take away for everyone is that God is bigger than any mistake we make. I am excited to start this tradition in my family.
I would easily recommend this book to anyone who hopes to instill in their children a faith that lasts. While every suggestion shared may not be for you, there are plenty of ideas you will no doubt find helpful in your unique family. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher and BookLookBloggers in exchange for an honest review.
mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Great real world applicationJuly 29, 2014mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Author Kara Powell, is a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary. Kara speaks regularly at youth ministry conferences and she was named by Christianity Today as one of the 50 Women You Should Know.
Her latest book; Sticky Faith; a Guide for Your Family comes out August 5th 2014 from Zondervan. A new title, but one of several titles from Kara based on the idea of Sticky Faith If you dont know, Sticky Faith is a term coined by the folks at Fuller Seminary to describe a faith that sticks (lasts) beyond the High School years into the college and adult years. The Sticky Faith idea is an ongoing project Fuller is dedicated to furthering by taking current research and translating it into usable resources that elevate church leaders, kids, and families.
Her new book, Sticky Faith a Guide for Your Family shows how parents can be a partner and primary influence in their childs faith journey. Why is that important? Well, did you know 50% of kids raised in good Christian homes end up walking away from their faith as they break out of High School and into adult hood? Its true.
So what Sticky Faith wants to do is provide parents with tools to grow deep-rooted faith in our kids. But dont worry, this book isnt some fluff piece filled with tripe and out dated information. This book has been field tested with real life families all the while crunching the data and redefining the process.
Plus, Kara Powell is not some outside observer in a lab coat, she is a real life Mom with 3 kids of her own that she introduces the readers to through her enjoyable stories and heart filled examples.
Kara Powell writes from experience and she writes with her soul you can tell from her voice that this is something that she cares a lot about, but its something that we should all care a lot about. We need to be talking with our kids (our own kids) about faith.
So if you want a real world read that is realistic in its application, but at the same time approachable for the busy do-it-all parent, I would highly recommend picking this up.
Thank you to Zondervan for the preview copy in exchange for an honest evaluation.
